Holosun mounting location

In the never ending search for an ultradot replacement, I took a chance on a holosun 403b (aimpoint clone) it arrived today and I put the low base on and mounted it to my 45. I thought it was really high, but I put my vortex strike fire on behind it and they cowittness so I guess it's just the smaller optic that has me thrown.

My question to those that have this, or similar size scopes, do you mount in front of the ejection port, or behind it? Seems to me one lens is going to get coated with oil in either case...

Thoughts???

What happened

Well, the saga continues... I mounted the holosun on my 45 yesterday (slide mount) and the dot went off after the second shot. I was not pleased... I fiddled with it, and it came back on, but only for three more shots. I called the company, and they gave some suggestions and offered either a replacement or a full refund, including return shipping.

I was going to send it back, but as I was unmounting it last night the dot came back. Well, I'll give it one more try.

I cleaned the battery compartment with a qtip and remounted the sight. I shot it again over lunch today, and it failed again after the first few shots. I pushed hard on the battery tray, and the dot came back. shot a few more times and the dot went away, but came back each time I pushed the battery tray. The intervals between failures got longer and at the end I had fired about 70 rounds with no dot Failure.

Think I'll keep it for a time, for the price, if it holds up, it's a good deal... if it holds up...

Mine was a 403GL, wonder if that makes a difference.

Absolutely. the GL has a screw cap battery holder, the one I have has a friction fit slide in/out tray... that's the part that concerns me...

I keep electrical tape in all my shooting kits. Just a quick fix option.

10sandxs, please keep us informed on the stability of zero with this sight.  I'm thinking of getting the 403GL to replace my UD HD Micro which seems to get squirrelly after hundreds of 9mm rounds.  I have yet to contact UD until I do one more range test to show the "double group" tendency and extreme flyers.

I took the holosun to the range to day and fired about 200 rounds of timed fire.  there were no failures of the dot, so I'm pleased with that. after sight in, the gun/dot shot very well, so well, I'm either going to reduce my powder charge and/or increase the spring weight as ejection is pretty "positive".

the dot did not change zero and I must say the clicks are very positive.  on the down side, it needs tubes as the lenses get pretty dirty from the oil in the gun.  one slight annoyance, the dot is canted slightly to the right. not enough to cause any significant issues, just barely enough to notice it.  I suspect it's due to the clamp on the mount, but it's still annoying to the point where I may machine a new base for it, we'll see.

I do also plan to shoot the "square" this weekend to verify that the adjustments are repeatable.  I'll let you know how that goes next week.

10sandxs, is the dot as crisp as the one of the matchdot? I have a Primary Arms Micro Dot I bought instead of the Holosun, and while it is 2 MOA it is not nearly as crisp as my matchdots. It would be great to have an aimdot sized site that was crisp, aside from the price.

Fpk... not even close... the starbrust make the dot look bigger, at least the points of the dot...
