Post by albertrichard123 on 9/20/2017, 3:41 pm

List: can any of you that shoot this bullet in a SW Model 52- 1,2 recommend a good powder charge with the bullet set flush with the case mouth?

I need two things:
1. 1,2 or 3 recommended powder charges using BE or what ever powder you like ....
2. a Star powder bar 00 for one of the powder loads any of you suggest.

also, let me know if you have a bar you are willing to sell,

and thanks to all

Check with Bruce Williams at Star Machine Works for the powder bar and bushings. 2.8 grains of Bullseye is the classic load for 148 grain bullets.

Or 2.7 grains of BE, which is what my Star came with for .38 Specials.

2.7 Bullseye ; 2.4 Red Dot; 2.8 Green Dot; 3.5 Unique

2.8 WST; 3.2 W231; 2.5 700X

Are all pretty standard 38 HBWC loads.  Some may or may not function in a semi-auto.  Al Miller and Ken Waters, both of Handloader magazine, liked Green Dot in their pistols.

Al Miller wrote a series of three or four articles on 38 wadcutter load development for .Handloader back in the early 70s. Everything from case prep, to bullets, to Ransom rest testing. I forgot about his findings with Greendot. Worth investigating on his word alone.
So, what bushing would you need for the appropriate in a Star?

(Maybe we're drifting the topic to where it should be in the ammunition category?)

HI. I would need a 00 powder bar for 2.7,or 2.8,2.9?,
I,m hoping someone has gone down this road already and can come up with a preferred powder load for the 148 gr HBWC load to use in the SW 52 auto

The bar I have from Bruce has a hole that a has replacement bushings in it. I can drop in a bushing for what ever weight charge I want. I think the bushings run 7$ Also Bruse has some adjustable powder bars

Bruce can make you a bushing for most any load you need. He's made several for me for specific loads that the normal bushings didn't cover.

the old bushings were 1/2" Pacific pistol bushings.
