A while ago I posted links to my new Accuracy X long slide 10mm 1911 hitting a regulation steel pig silhouette at 300 yards.

The gun just completed its field trials by making consecutive hits on a steel ram at 500 yards.  Here's the video of that.

And hey, soon I'll get my new 1911 !

So, how much do they knock off, now that it is a used pistol? Laughing Seriously though, these guys know what they are all about. You'll have the most accurate 1911 around. You're a lucky guy!

Thanks Mike!

I don't expect a discount on this one.  Heck, Steve Huff was just breaking it in for me!

Here's the particulars on the pistol and ammo used for the 500 yard demonstration:

Pistol- Accuracy X PRO PLUS Series™️ 1911 Longslide
Barrel- Accuracy X, Inc. 6 inch Match Barrel
Caliber- 10mm
Powder- LongShot
Charge Weight- 9.5 gr.
Bullet- 180 gr. JHP Nosler Sporting Projectile
Case- Starline
Primer- F150M
Seated 1.245
FPS- 1300+

While I couldn't begin to build a 1911, I did load the ammo. The load data is maximum listed load on the Hodgdon website; http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol

Every charge was weighed on an RCBS Chargemaster.
There was some variation in bullets by a couple tenths of a grain. I could of and probably should have sorted for only those at exactly 180 grains. Same for the brass.  Nevertheless, the load shot well.

Good old LongShot. Works wonders for low pressure heavy 10 gauge loads for Damascus steel barreled shotguns. Shot many a goose with Longshot...

Mark, you are obviously getting an outstanding 1911.  Congratulations!

If I can ask, since you wanted accuracy out to those unbelievable distances, why did you decide to go with a Pro Plus instead of a X Series pistol?

Thanks,
Thomas

Thomas,

In hindsight I probably should have.  I however have three Accuracy X Pro Plus 1911's and each exceeds their performance standard.  Steve Huff personally tests every gun he builds in the Ransom Rest.  The 2" at 50 yards Pro Plus guarantee is the biggest group his guns will shoot.

Building a 10mm for hot hunting loads that would provide me 200 hit accuracy for coyote and woodchuck size game, or if however unlikely I needed to defend myself against a rifleman at that range, the Pro Plus seemed a reasonable choice.  To me, this is a modern Horse Pistol.

I am not surprised that Steve's latest creation far exceeds my expectations.  That's why I continue to order his top of the line guns.

One thing I wonder about the Accuracy X guns is why they use a stainless slide and lower for their guns. I was told by an old friend of my father's who is a retired cop, and now a trainer and competitor for Sig Sauer, to never get an all stainless gun because they wear out faster for some reason. And this is a guy with a gun safe of at least 50 completely worn out 1911's.

Video of 1911 Consecutive Hits at 500 Yards Empty Re: Video of 1911 Consecutive Hits at 500 Yards

Post by MarkOue 11/26/2017, 10:14 am

Thirty years ago I heard the same thing.  That was then and this is now with much better metallurgy and CNC manufacturing.  Just look at cars of 1987 and today.  Then 100,000 miles and your car had to be towed to the junkyard.  Now cars last two to three times longer.  So do guns from exacting makers.  Those makers that use castings and MIM parts, not so much.

Perhaps if Accuracy X used high carbon steel their guns might last even longer but frankly, one would have to shoot the heck out of their guns to wear them out.  I'm working at it but I think my AXI guns will outlast me.

The AXI build process is documented in this link:
https://accuracyx.com/building-a-custom-1911/

The following is an excerpt from the above link explaining their frames and slides:

“First you must start with a strong foundation, and that is why we use only the finest drop forgings made from the highest grade North American ore. Using the highest grade ore ensures our slides and frames will be made of the highest quality and purest material, giving our 1911s performance advantages unmatched by others.

Unlike the others who use cheaper and less expensive castings and forgings made from lower quality ore, sourced from places like China, India and Korea to save costs. Accuracy X slides and frames, although more costly to make, are stronger and more rigid than others in the industry. The result is finished slides and frames with improved strength characteristics and dimensional integrity.

One practical indicator of this is when we test a 1911 in our mechanical testing fixture. If we test 1911s from other manufacturers, they can have a tendency to pinch or squeeze under the pressure of the inserts holding the frame in place. So we have to be very careful not to over tighten the clamping screws in other manufacturers frames or the triggers will get impinged in the trigger tracks because those frames flex and bend under the pressure. Our Accuracy X frames do not have that tendency.

So as you can see by having stronger slides and frames, our 1911s have a more solid foundation to build upon. The superior quality of our slide and frame material also gives us a substantial advantage in the area of slide and frame fit in regards to our stainless slide and frames. Our Accuracy X, Inc. 416R stainless slides and frames do not have a tendency to gall like other manufacturers stainless slides and frames do. The poor quality ore (again, often sourced from places like India, Korea and China) used in those other castings and forgings from other manufacturers, can be very prone to severe galling under match fitted conditions.

Also our prolific use of the highest grade 416R stainless steel gives our 1911s superior corrosion resistance. In inclement weather our customers do not have to worry too much about keeping their 1911 dry in order to prevent rust and other problems caused by moisture.

Using our superb drop forgings, we then machine our slides and frames. We hold the tightest tolerances. Problem areas that are found on the slides and frames of other manufacturers in the industry, are done away with, by using exact precise machining processes.

We machine the slide grooves and frame rails straight and true. Our breech faces are flat and correct. Our slide lugs are perfectly machined being correct and consistent. The trigger tracks in our frames are even and straight. Our finished slides and frames are held to extremely tight tolerances and checked repeatedly throughout the machining process with the latest CMM (Computer Measuring Machines) equipment.

By creating and using our own slides and frames with consistent and accurate dimensional integrity, we control the basic building blocks of our 1911 builds. We do not have to correct and fix any problems with our slide and frames because they are manufactured correctly in the first place. We don’t have to square up the breech face on slides, adjust slide grooves that are not parallel or adjust frame rails that do not match. We don’t need to true up the main bore on the slides so they are actually round, or compensate for improper radial lug placement etc. (these are all problems found in other manufacturers slide and frame components).

At Accuracy X, we control the entire process making the finest slide and frames parts in the industry.”

That's a pretty strong sales pitch, particularly that they basically promise that their stainless steel is better than other manufacturers, and doesn't gall. I just googled 416-R stainless, looks like really good stuff that they make rifle barrels out of. Kind of makes me want an Accuracy X now...

Sales pitch is sales pitch.

Steel is steel, fundamentally, and if they have the same dimensions as any other 1911, they will deflect the same when clamped in the Ransom.  416 stainless is a mildly martensitic steel Capable of hardening to about Rc36.  If it was my choice I’d opt for 15-5PH steel which can get a little harder.  At least for the slide.
