Which 38 wadcutter to put a dot on? Empty Which 38 wadcutter to put a dot on?

Post by orpheoet Sun Dec 10, 2017 11:55 am

I have a 65 Colt that was converted to .38 wadcutter and an early 70's M52-2. Both are in excellent condition and I really hate to mess with either. HOWEVER the eyes aren't getting better with age. I'm leaning toward the mount that attaches to the barrel weight rails on the 52 but I'd be very interested to read what others say. I have the grip mount attachment for 1911's and I really don't like it so that's out. I shoot them about the same as far as scores.

David,
Clark built Heavy Slide .38 specials for many years. They basically took off the Bomar rib and replaced with a scope mount rail. You can have your slide drilled and tapped for the mount. They will function 2.8 gr BE with 148's.

I like the no drill BME mount for the Model 52 that uses the dovetail slot for the rear sight

I may go this route with a 52 as well.

Did the above BME mount also for my M52-2. Went with a Vortex Venom reflex, didn't like it at all, the sight adjustment free wheels instead of clicks. I just couldn't get the thing sighted in. At 25 yards I could get close enough, but at 50 it seemed like I was to one side of the target to the other.

I took it off, and put a Burris FF3, (fits the same BME mount) much better, doesn't free wheel, but the clicks are very faint. I did get it centered up. I really prefer the Ultradod/Sightron sights, but feared the light recoil of the 52 couldn't handle the extra weight.

Personally I would not use anything that would require your slide or frame to be drilled and tapped. The no drill BME would appear to be the way to go.  Several years ago (1988 to be exact) I had my wad gun and ball gun rebuilt.  These guns had originally been built by my father while he was working at the Air Force Marksmanship Unit at Lackland.  Being a new guy in Bullseye I thought I just had to have a Bo-mar rib on the wad gun. Knowing what I know now I would never of done that.  It just happens the the 2 pre-70 series 1911's are consective serial numbers.  So as you can understand my recomendation.  Don't do anything that would de-value your current gun(s).

I have a BME dovetail mount and my HD-Micro fits directly on it well.

BME also makes a mount with a single slot in the middle instead of the end. I had a Holosun mounted (Same mount as Aimpoint) but took it off and have been shooting it with a 30mm dot. Working well so far but have not put many rounds down range with new setup.

They are Nills SW123XL. The other side shows how big they are. You can get them smaller. But not bigger. Very Happy

Grip mounts were never really reliable. The screws loosen, bullet impact changes. Not a good idea. I've been shooting a slide mount for over 30 years with absolutely no problems. I also shoot a .38 super with a frame mount with no problems. However, frame mounts put the sights pretty high over the center bore so...  You'll have drill and tap your slide or your frame. Or just deal with the inconsistencies of a grip mount.
