New 9000sc on my RO a few questions Empty New 9000sc on my RO a few questions

Post by lablover 1/2/2018, 6:06 pm

Got th slide back from KC today and waisted no time gettin it set up.  WOW sure feels different now for sure.  I do have a few questions if anyone can help

Using the rings that came with the aimpoint. They seem solid enough and go on the RRA rail with no issues.  Do you guys torque these screws to any specific poundage?  Both the screws that attach the rings to the rail as well as the screws that hold the scope in the rings.  I’d hate to get tight happy here.

How far back do you mount the scope?  Not that there is tons of room to go forward and back but now I have the back of th scope about even with the rear of the slide.  I can see futur upgrades soon. Like some checkering on the front strap. Guess I could use skateboard tape until after next season.Rolling Eyes

Comes in at 48 oz all in...glad I have th ruger MK IV for rimfire. Almost weighs th same.

I have to say that 9000sc is a joy to look thru. Clear as a bell!

I will say I’m shocked that slide can even operate with that beast sitting on top.  I plan on 4.0be 11lb recoil spring with a 190 SWC bullet. Seems after advice that’s a good place to start.

Should be able to stretch her legs Thursday at practice.  Look forward to any advice from the guys here.

Getting serious now. Laughing

A big thank yOu to KC. And the great work and fast turn around time. He will for sure get all my business in the future

Dot position for me is all about the balance I like on the pistol.. try simply moving it forward and back and see where YOU like it.

I would get a 10 pound spring on order. Careful with the torque, they strip easy, 10 inch pounds perhaps but rely on feel. I've swapped out my rings on the 22 conversion to Warne all steel rings and on my 45's I'm running aluminum rings with steel crossbar & insert.

At first look I liked the rings provided by Aimpoint for the 9000sc I ordered more of the same rings from Midway also learned they are the cheapest they have! Problem with those rings is the small head diameter plus that slot. Therefore leaving a small amount of Aluminum under the screw head. I modified that area and they have been working fine. I would change the rings, Weaver makes  good Aluminum Rings. I don't like the 2 piece style rings provided by UltraDot.

With no information in the owner's manual, do you know the size of the screws? Refer to a standard torque table.

Look at the Vortex Hunter 30mm low rings. The stock Aimpoint rings are 2.4 onces, with a bit of sanding on the steel nuts on the Vortex rings to remove unnecessary weight I got them to 2.6 ounces, the difference is you get a steel stud so they're nearly impossible to strip when torquing onto the rail.

Time to go shopping for some new rings then. I will give these a try at practice tomorrow, bad thing is I’ll have to re-zero after the new rings. I did notice the bolt head was a little small for the size gap on the base mount. I could try a tiny washer maybe for tomorrow.

I really appreciate the help fellas.

Zane. What aluminum rings did you end up getting for your 45

I started with Leupold steel low rings when I switched to 30mm scopes. Look closely at their cross bolt set up. It is a rectangle of steel that fits in the slot on a Piccatinny vs a round bolt in a square slot !

I was just looking at the Leupold PRW rings. Looks just like the aimpoint but built better.  Might be an option

New 9000sc on my RO a few questions Empty Re: New 9000sc on my RO a few questions

Post by zanemoseley 1/3/2018, 7:54 pm

My favorite rings are the all steel Warne 213M, I use them on conversions where weight isn't an issue. They weigh 4.6 ounces which is nearly double the stock rings.

On my 45's my favorite ring is the Vortex Hunter 30mm low which weigh just 2.6 ounces after sanding the nuts down a bit, just 0.2 ounces over the stock rings and the cross bolt has a steel stud in the ring (not tapped into aluminum). The top ring half screws still go into aluminum but you can go easier on them than the cross bolt. With the weight of a 9000sc and rings on a tight slide mount gun you get to needing a pretty stout powder charge to ensure function however the recoil isn't bad at all due to the large recoiling slide.

The Weaver Tactical 99515 rings also looked promising but weighs a bit more than the Vortex rings and costs more.

I also like the Leupold PRW but with a 9000 the weight is probably a bit much. I have been looking at rings from a different company. The price is certainly right. They look like they are knock off Burris rings for half the price. I might order a pair and if they don't work on a 45 they can always go on a 22. Just thought you might like another option. 17.95

All great options I did some searching here and found several folks that seem happy with the aimpoint rings. I’m going to give them a shot tomorrow and see what happens.  Right now I’m at 3 pounds unloaded.  Not sure I want to go with a much heavier ring.

Len, thanks for th link may be worth a try at that cost for sure.

Zane, I thInk my local Cabela’s has those vortex rings I’ll check them out.  You’ll have to let me know wher on the nuts your doing the sanding.  It’s a stock RO with the aimpoint so the slide is not crazy tight.  I have some 190s loaded up it’s 4 gr BE so not sur if that’s hot enough.  I also have a 10lb spring on standby and a 11 lb in the gun.  I bought a kit from Wolfe so I have several different weights

Edit:  just noticed the vortex pro rings weigh 1.2 oz ea. So that may be another option.  Pricey but what the heck

I’d be interested on how you modified the aimpoint rings

New here. I think my 2nd post.
I recently upgraded my Ultra Dot rings for three basic reasons. I desired lower, slimmer and horizontal top rings.
Went with the Leupold. Only about 2 oz heavier, square steel cross pin, lower, no clumsy screw heads and nuts and generally much higher quality.

Len, those rings look nice but will likely be quite heavy as they're triple screw deep top halves.

I would try the Vortex rings without sanding first, I think sanding the rings only saves about .1 ounces. The nuts are round but just use a flat head for tightening (not loving this fact, would prefer a hex method) so you can sand some meat out of the nut leaving the flat head portion, can shoot a picture if you need. Again it only saves .1 ounce but I was trying to get as close to the stock ring weight as possible.

New 9000sc on my RO a few questions Empty Re: New 9000sc on my RO a few questions

Post by Froneck 1/3/2018, 11:07 pm

Been over a year ago, I can't remember the thread size or if I re-tapped the clamp. For my .22 I counter bored the cap screw recess slightly bigger and inserted longer cap screw. Can't remember why I didn't use Button head hex screws though I remember thinking about it. On the .45 I machined a large washer using 1/2 hard 4140 tool steel with an extension that matched the existing cap screw counter bore. I then milled the sides of the washer with the projection so that it matched the width of the aluminum hook section with material just thick enough to support the clamping hooks. It now looks like a metal strip with a projection fitting the screw counter bore. I then inserted a longer hex cap screw. Now the screw head via the metal strip supports the entire width of the ring's clamping hooks. Cold blued the metal strip.

Zanemosely, I was considering getting them to compare to Burris and I wanted their weight. I have tried to find the weight of them and the steel ones the same company sells for 20.95. I am sure I will need another set someday..... or maybe not Rolling Eyes

New 9000sc on my RO a few questions 20171237

This is the strong looking steel one I mentioned. I wish I could find out what they weigh.

Yep, Burris looking design, they actually look thinner in some areas.
Price is right, that is for sure.
