38 Special Case Expansion

Anyone use LEE Universal Die with an NOE Plug?

If so what size do you use? I am looking to expand the case without flaring the mouth too much.

I use the "360 x .356 (P) Exp. Plug" and it just barely works because it only sizes a little bit of the top of the case and not the 2/3+ of the bullet length that Jerry recommended. I have not found anyone that regularly sells a correctly dimensioned expander that fits any die. So I keep meaning to make one, but just have too many other projects on the list and I get by.

I just ordered the NOE better than what i got and S/B plenty good for SWC.

The right size for 45acp, 9mm and 38 special could be sold as a set for $50 may even get Brownells to stock the kit.

I ordered the next size up for 45acp because .456 x .452 works good but the next size may work better.

I use the .457 one as well. That works great!

I have the .361 x 357, .360 x .356, .359 x .355, .453 x .449 and .454 x .450.  The Lee Universal Case Expanding Die (90798) seems to work very well with the NOE Pistol Expander Plug.

If you use Dillon dies Steve Bathje makes an awesome insert.  If you have a Dillon press and don't want to go down the path of the NOE and Lee, you can use Steve's powder through expander.  Steve makes both 38 and 45, also if there's something on his store you need, but not listed, just send him an email.

Here's photos of Steve's insert (made from stainless) vs. the OEM Dillon.

Very little bell.  Very nice as the bullet can be seated very straight and the mouth is not being overly expanded.

Example of how straight the bullets are seated

Finger pressure can seat 90% of .357 diameter bullet just like Jerry recommended.  Factory on the right, finger pressure seated 158gr LSWC on the left.  Important to have the correct NOE plug ~ .001” greater than the bullet diameter, but you may need to step up to ~ .002" above the diameter.  I would try .360 for the HBWC (see photo below).

End result.   I pulled the bullet from the end with pliers to measure. Bullets I used to test aren’t the best, but that’s why I used them   I’ll be setting up a tool head with the Lee/NOE in station 1 on my Dillon 650 since I de-cap on a single stage.  I'll repeat with MagTech 158gr LRN and Zero 158gr LSWCs for DR ammo and post up the results in the future to see if it works as well with a couple popular bullets.

This is from NOE's forum

Here's my current setup for long line 45 ACP/38 special LSWC on a Dillon progressive:

Station 1 - Size only (NOE) (deprime on a single stage or seperate run on the progressive)
Station 2 - Powder/Flare - No flare or expansion, just dump powder by backing the expander out (station 1 took care of this)
Station 3 - Powder Check
Station 4 - Seat
Station 5 - Crimp

Here's my tentative setup (waiting for Steve's expander) for short line 45 ACP LSWC or jacketed bullets on a Dillon progressive:

Station 1 - Size/de-cap
Station 2 - Powder Measure - Use Steve Bathje expander
Station 3 - Powder Check
Station 4 - Bullet Seating
Station 5 - Crimp

I cannot find this expander in the NOE store and searching for "35R" does not turn it up either.

Do you have a link to the one in the picture?

Rich,
I assume you are referring to the Remington 148g HBWC.  I have been using zero bullets with Lymans M die with a custom plug that expands the full length as Jerry suggested.  This setup has worked well for me.  So, I decided to try the Remington 148g HBWC that I have heard so much about.   I received my first shipment of 2000 Remington bullets in January.  Then I bought a Lee universal die and made an expander plug for it.   My plug measures is .361" at the case mouth and .3595" at the end.  The bullets go in around 3/16" before they hit the taper between the two diameters and stop.  So I think they fit perfectly and they load very nicely.   The problem I am having is the plug is VERY hard to pull out of the case.  Its is so hard that I am afraid that the plug is going to get stuck in the case. My first instinct is to make the plug smaller but before I do that I am wondering what others do.   Does anyone know what the dimensions for this plug should be?  or have any other suggestions for correcting?

It appears that the expander in the picture above is actually listed in the "Expander Plug (Rifle)" section:

.361 x .357 Exp. Plug [361REXP]

I just ordered one and will report back if this turns out to work with the LHBWC bullets.

JayhawkNavy02, very nice presentation. That was a high quality post that took some time to put together.
