WTS perfect 17-4 target masterpiece, new in box.

Post by SmokinNJokin on 7/4/2018, 4:34 pm

Selling this 17-4 for my grandfather. Bought it new, put in the closet and never shot. Here's a link to the gunbroker add. I can end the auction any time as long as there aren't any bids. Would prefer not to pay the gunbroker fee, but trying to get Grandpa as much money as possible for it.

Thanks for looking.

Does not appear to have any marks on the cylinder from firing or dry firing.

Yes it is perfect. Im afraid the price he wants for it may be a little unrealistic. Who knows, the internet will tell in time...

What database did you get that from?

This is a good handy reference for Smith & Wesson dating.

In this case it may have been built in 1977 ish on a frame made in 1974.  The serial dates it in ‘74, but the 17-4 would have been 1977 when the dash number changed?

I think you guys are disregarding the first # of the serial. Its 75K8305, which puts it at 1980 by everywhere I have looked.

Yep.  A real K-22 (not a 17-##) with the 1.5” guarantee you could probably get it.

Given the condition in the photos, the price IMHO is 100-200 over a sale to a collector. I recently sold a 1964 airweight in like condition to a serious collector for over 700 and a well used model 14 with target hammer and trigger to a bullseye shooter for a like amount.

Yes, you would be correct. But, it is a 17-4 not a  K-22...

Aha, goes to show how much I know about S&W revolvers (only what I read on the internet). I was under the impression all K-frame 22's are commonly referred to as "K22's". So 17-4 and K-22 are mutually exclusive models, I suppose?
I better change the listing title to not look like someone who knows nothing about S&W revolvers.

And I'm sure that you are all quite right about the price, but thats what he directed me that he would like to get out of it, and I'll be damned if I tell my grandpa with colon cancer that I did not at least give it the old college try.

Actually a NIB 17 of that vintage with 3Ts would be worth about 950 to 1000.  But I am not a collector and as soon as it gets shot the value drops to 850 or so.

As I understand it, the K22 was also referred to as the pre-model 17.
They just carry a higher premium than the later guns.
It's all good. It's a very desirable firearm.

I’d shoot the dog out of it! That’s why mine is more along the lines of 80% bluing. I have a 17-3. I wanted a shooter. Not a collectors piece. I’d love to be able to afford a collectors piece though. They sure are pretty!

Do not drop the price, it will sell eventually. I would pay $800 for a used one if I was in the market and gladly pay $1000 for new gun with and original box. If I was a true collector and appreciated the model then even $1400 would not be out of the question because I have never seen a NIB 17-4. Moreover, the prices of S&W are going up so I would wait.

I had a guy pay me $800/900 for a boxed 14-2 in 90% to 95% condition. 17-4s are harder to find.

Busy summer, this has been sitting in the safe with no sale add posted. I rectified that and got it back up on gunbroker. Here's the updated listing.

Considering condition it's in I too would stick to the price . Some collector will buy it eventually . 2 - 3 years ago it'd already sold , but prices have declined somewhat . Having it on GB will insure maximum exposure to buyers / collectors with deep pockets .

it will sell at that price,

just have to be patient

btw,

change your add to say $999.99,

yes a penny drop sounds silly, but folks read 999 better than 1000

and, if you  add info, the  < BR > (use small case br not upper case and no spaces) between sentences will give it the appearance of sentences, with a break,  not just a big paragraph, if that makes sense

I think you will get $900 to $1000 just a matter of the right buying coming in.
