Personally I'd pick the 1911 all day. The 1911 fits my hand better and you should be more familiar with a 1911 anyway. I'd pick 38 special over 9mm if its an option.

I'd go for the .38 Super verses the Special.  If you stick with irons you could shoot the Super in EIC matches too.

FYI
I have a 1-32 twist 9MM built by KC, you have to load the 9MM with a 115gr XTP or HAP bullet to 1,100fps for it to be accurate (1")
KC set up my 9mm with a 1-10 twist .38 Super so I could shoot either.  With the Super I run very soft shooting 147gr lead loads (2.8gr of WST).  It's almost as soft shooting as my M52 and is almost as accurate as the 9MM (<1.5").  With hotter 147gr JHP are even a little more accurate than lead.

The AMU were running 1-32 twist barrels in their Beretta's but many have switched over to 1-18 twist.

My gun has a frame mount optic.

If for no other reason than magazine and barrel availability I’d also go for the Super.  It also will be accurate loaded hot or down to 38 WC velocities.

The problem with most 9mm and 38 super rack guns is they are twisted for faster loads. Now if you're going all custom then you can get what you want. Shooting slower 38 super loads is slightly "experimental" you won't find a ton of people doing it but they are out there. I work with Jon quite a bit, he hasn't done much work with 38 Super but has done a lot of work with 38 special and has great success with it which is why he's building me a custom 1911 in 38 special. Magazine are available new by TripleK, barrels aren't an issue. And as Chris said, get proficient with a 45 before you branch out into other "fun" calibers.

1911 in 9mm is growing very popular for service pistol.
