Glaucoma w/ pilocarpine treatment
Team,
Not sure if this in the right sub-forum or not- but I've recently been diagnosed with glaucoma. Getting old, etc.
The doctor has prescribed pilocarpine and said it might take some adjustments on when to dose before shooting, driving long distances, etc. I have some experimenting to do, but does any of the collective have any experience using pilocarpine and shooting?
Thanks!
T

He sure didn't tell you everything. You need to check out the side effects and the number of doses per day and the precautions.

Re: Glaucoma w/ pilocarpine treatment
After losing my right dominant eye to advanced glaucoma and having glaucoma but not advanced glaucoma in my left eye, and having cataract surgery on both eyes my ophthalmologist put me on 1 drop of Breminidine in each eye in the A M and 1 drop in both eyes of Breminodine and LatanaProst my glaucoma seems to be at a standstill but the after effects of everything turned out to be that some side effects are a real pain in the arse. I'm 74 and I wish you well. Do take care of the glaucoma ASAP. I did not and I am dearly paying for repercussions of not being able to take care of the Glaucoma in a timely fashion.

Re: Glaucoma w/ pilocarpine treatment
Good evening (now , here in Italy, it is...)
Before all. I apologize if my English writing will be poor and often wrong, but I hope to be understood anyway.
I just inscribed to the forum I didn't know, so I'm going to present me.
I'm quite surprised about the therapy of the OP .... I'm Ophthalmologist, and I must say that pilocarpine is so rarely prescribed that sometimes is out of stock . We use it only before specific laser treatments, but the side effects when prescribed for a long term therapy limited his use to quasi-zero.
Of course when other drugs are contraindicated, we must accept pilocarpine.
Shooting will require more light in the environment, due to the myosis, i.e. the pupil constriction. Again, a little amount of myopia may occur, varying the need of your eyeglasses.
My main question is: if you had this prescription, it is certain you have a narrow angle glaucoma; did you perform a laser iridothomy?

Good evening!
Your English is better than my Italian!
I'm scheduled for surgery in about a month- the drops are just to get me there in one piece. I was hoping to continue to practice shooting up to surgery, but am given to understand that different people experience the medication differently, depending on a whole host of factors. Sorry I wasn't clear on this issue- these drops aren't a long term solution.
I elected for the pilocarpine as my mother had used it when she suffered from glaucoma, but she isn't here for me to ask if she noticed anything different about her vision depending on when she put the drops in, either AM or PM; doctor said once a day, along with another eye drop (can't remember the name just now) to use in the other time slot. I used the pilo this morning, but I'll be honest, it didn't seem to do anything, so got that going for me, I guess.
Thanks for writing in!

Re: Glaucoma w/ pilocarpine treatment
Well, Aufidius, I,m glad you don't feel discomfort using pilocarpine. I suppose the only difference will be the small pupil diameter: in this case, a good focusing and some degree of light dimming. Not bad, finally. In young people often an headache occurs, in the supraorbital, frontal region. It is not our case, I suppose
I'm sure your surgery will resolve your ocular disease, and you will continue to shoot better than before!!!
