I've always loaded my 160's for the short line with 4.2gr of Bullseye and a .469 crimp. I bought some Brazos 160's with the hi tech coating, loaded them with 4.0 Bullseye and crimped them .463. Very soft shooting and just as accurate. Me likes.

Bob Crow, of Bob's Bullets, and formerly cast bullets; Bob owned Quality Cast running it for several years. He sold the business and it disappeared. Bob Is back under the new name. I have shot his bullets since he opened as Q C, a very good bullet.
He makes the 160 which has been used for many yrs in the mid & N Ohio area, 1st used in the area by Doc Young I think. Doc won Perry using the bullet in the '70's as discussed in the "Rifleman" at the time.
Bob shot BE @Canton & are for many yrs achieving 2600 & DP. He knows what pistol competition is all about and is a meticulous caster. He is also first class to do business with.

Re: 160 grain bullets 45 caliber
I've never had much luck with the 160's at 50yds. A few on this thread love them at 50yds. I've tried 4.3-4.5gr Bullseye but have always had better results with 180, 185, and 200gr SWC's. To be fair I have always crimped my lead SWC's at .469". Does the .463 crimp make that big of a difference at 50yds? Do you use that crimp with the heavier SWC's also? I would like to hear some of the long line loads with the 160's. Thanks.

4.2 to 4.3 of BE w/ the 160 for the 50 yd sf's. Variation depending on the lot of BE. W/o checking I don't recall the crimp for sure but seems that it was .465. When I bought the 1st H & G mold the experienced shooters advised never going under 4 grains for the 50 yd line.
H & G listed those bullets as 165 and the molds as a 242S...the S for short. I think the 242 was a 180 or 185. There were a few molds around that were a 175 grain and were used for 50 yds. The heavier wts were longer bullets. None were bevel based.

On lead bullets I've always used roll crimps. Does anyone use taper crimps on lead?

The .45acp headspaces on the mouth of the case. Therefore, IMO, you should never use a roll crimp on this cartridge; it leads to inconsistent headspacing. (Might be okay in a revolver with half moon clips, but why do it?) Taper crimping is the way to go.

I've always understood that roll crimping is for rimmed cases, and cases that headspace off of the case mouth get taper crimped.

+1. Generally, the type of crimp is determined by how the cartridge headspaces. Not whether or not the projectile is lead. For example, when reloading .357 magnum with lead, I roll crimp (into the cannelure) because the cartridge headspaces on the cartridge rim. When reloading .45 ACP, I taper crimp because the cartridge headspaces on the cartridge mouth.james r chapman wrote:Generally correct.
