You might want to redesign how your securing the pistols in the box, that’s an accident waiting to happen. I promise when that box tips over the guns will squeeze out and say hi to each other.

Jon, the pistols are very secure. They do not move in the box. Here's a picture of the pistols upside down. If you drop the box on concrete they could come loose, but they won't go anywhere when it comes to normal handling.

There may have been some confusion as to the clamping pads, that was my fault. I took pics of a unfinished 2 gun box with pistols, the unfinished boxed was that, unfinished including the clamping pads not having any liner attached. So anyone who visited my website saw 2 pistols sitting clamped without all spacers may have questioned how secure the pistols would be. I attached liner to the clamping pads and put in the spacers to show how the finished clamping setup. The pic I posted with the tray upside down was of the 3 gun tray which had the liner attached to the pads.

Thanks to all who responded with questions and brought this to my attention, I am good at building but not very tech savvy or good at writing or explaining things in writing.

Your pistol boxes look nice and everyone will appreciate another helping this industry. As a buyer and owner of several different versions of pistol boxes for our community, I'm always interested in weight. Pistol box weight that is. While the box may weigh x.y lbs and recognizing I'm always more guilty of adding an additional magazine for each caliber, several caliber bore snakes, backup ammo+, magic lubricant, polarizers, special tools, special metric tools, green bills (of your denomination today), etc. Bottom line... how much weight are your pistol boxes as I'm getting lower middle younger age, a pound of box allows me to walk less miles per week?

Thank you in advance and appreciate your business support to the shooting community.

Thanks for your interest ClintW

I will have to update my website as that is important information, my 3 gun box empty weighs 16.4 Lbs. I did build the 3 gun box slightly bigger in all dimensions as I to am guilty of taking extra ammo, magazines, equipment with me.

Thanks

If you want to build it light, start with lighter materials.

You can go too far though. I custom made my box with an aluminum frame and composite panels, weight is probably around 5-6lbs empty. I have to strap it down at any outdoor match otherwise a light breeze or a bump of the bench will knock it over.

One of the problems with pistol box design is that the lid acts as a huge sail.  So a good question is why do boxes open like that?  To bring the scope up to eye level?  Are there OTHER solutions? A bunch.  Especially today.

+1 Wobbley

Maybe the forum should host a pistol box design thread. I keep re-inventing the internals of my custom box to accommodate more guns, less guns, new guns, big scope, small scope, etc. Never ending.

But I'd prefer to now start over and need innovative ideas.

One theory is the lid can be used as a wind block or to block brass. Mine does a good job at blocking brass, usually a good pile on top.

Over the years I’ve probably seen darn near every configuration of box design in use. I think the present day box is the best a box can be. I’m not a bring everything except the kitchen sink shooter. I mostly use my box for some equipment and my spotting scope. I carry my pistols separately as well as my ammo. I’ve used my gun box to block the wind and have shot on both sides of it to do it. I also like the ease of setting up on the line; open box, secure the lid, align the spotting scope and ready to go. This is important at Perry because they don’t give you much time. I also use my gun box to sit on. I also like using the inside of the lid for my “I love me” patches for all to see.
My 2 cents

I suppose they could be called "I love me" patches. I grew up calling them "scare" patches. Up, out, old, whatever..

I like the box. Someday I may have to have one made that holds 4 pistols. Wide enough that 4 custom pair of grips will fit side by side and 4 large red dot scopes won't bang each other up. It wouldn't blow over. Very Happy

Jon just plasters some of his 10X target centers to remind himself how easy it is (or used to be).  Those are some of his "Love Me" posts.

I added a simple feature to my box that secures the door open. I installed threaded inserts, 1 in the top of the door and 1 in the top of the box. Then installed a winged bolt so when door is opened just tighten winged bolt and door is secured open.

Strongboxes have something similar but I discovered, in the torrential rain at Canton last summer, water gets in and soaks everything.

More water is likely to get in through the hinge than the 1/4" hole but if concerned keep a short bolt with all the other small items that can quickly be installed as a plug.
