S&W 41 optic Empty S&W 41 optic

Post by flyer898 on Thu Jun 18, 2020 10:49 pm

I have a S&W 41 manufactured in 1959. It is a toss up between it and the 1960 manufactured High-Standard Trophy (space gun model 103) as to which has the better trigger. They both have better triggers than my recently purchased Hammerli 208 and my Walther GSP, each with a red dot sight.
The model 41 came with three barrels: a 7 3/8s with a brake, a 5" heavy barrel, and a 5" field barrel.
I have been thinking of mounting an optic - my eyes are no longer the envy of eagles.
I am considering the purchase of a Clark BOP 5" barrel or having the factory 5" barrel drilled for a mount. I suppose the first step is to test the factory barrel for accuracy (I have never mounted it to the gun).
If I decide to keep my factory barrel unmolested, what can I expect from a 5" BOP Clark barrel?
Thank you all for letting me sip from the well of experience on this site.

Mods, I think I posted this in the wrong forum. If this is more properly a post for the equipment discussion forum, I would appreciate having it moved there. Thank you.

If the 41 barrels are around same time frame of 1959, I would keep them unmolested. Clark is really good, they post expected groupings on their website. Excerpt: "We guarantee an X Ring grouping (we average about .8″ with 5 shots at 50 yards grouping from a machine rest)."

The BOP barrels come in either 5 1/2" or 6 1/2" and I have one of each. I just received the 6 1/2" pistol back from CCG two weeks ago and I remember the test group that came with it. 1 3/8" for 10 rounds at 50 yards shooting Eley black box. If there had not been a flier it would have been a sub one inch group. I am sure the 5 1/2" was similar but I am to lazy to go dig the box out and see.  Smile

Clark states that about 95% of the time the 41 barrel will not require any fitting, but if it does need fitting it is free of charge when you pay for the shipping. I would just ship them the pistol less the barrel and get them to ensure the fit and shoot you a test target at the same time.

The turn around time on the complete rebuild for that pistol was about 6 weeks. I am sure a barrel mount and test target would be quicker.

Is the reason 5% need fitting due to variations in the pistol over the years?
I do not remember when the 5” bbls. were  first offered. How does one tell the age of the bbl.?

MY bad it is a 90% drop in rate.

Per CCG  "We have about a 90% drop in rate.  If for any reason you’re barrel does not fit, give us a call.  We will fit your barrel at no labor charge.  You only need to pay for shipping."

No other comment is made by them. I my limited experience with CCG 41's, the 5 1/2" barrel will fit on either frame I have. The 6 1/2" barrel will not. The 6 1/2" barrel is fitted to a S&W Performance center frame. Is that the difference, I do not know but both frames are 2019 production pistols by S&W and likely the difference is at S&W.
