WTB Nelson conversion Empty WTB Nelson conversion

Post by Mmcavoy6 on 8/3/2020, 12:10 pm

Hello -
I'm fairly new to the bullseye game at the last match several of the seasoned shooters suggested I go with a Nelson conversion that way I am only trying to master 1 gun, that sure makes a lot of sense so I'm looking for a lightly used conversion with a rail mount my eyes are not good enough for iron sights.  I would order brand new but I would like to get something sooner then the estimated 4-6 weeks. Let me know if you have one for sale

Thanks
Mike

Although I shoot and like a Nelson conversion,
Due to the delivery time in the past, I purchased and used an Advantage Arms conversion.

Their conversion is also designed by Bob Marvel as is the Nelson.
Many top shooters use the AA conversion which might be readily available.

Thanks for the link - their website says the conversion will not work with the Springfield Armory RO - I have the RO Elite Target model.  I will ask them if it will work

Thanks for the info

I think that came from the fact that Springfield used to put a god awful stiff mainspring in their RO. Most bullseye shooters changed those out in order to get reliable function with light loads and slide mounted optics.
It’s my opinion that most conversions are iffy with the standard 23# mainspring. 18 to 20 seems to work the best.

Mine ran on a SA 9mm loaded just fine.
I believe that was due to the old ILS MSH which
Use a 23# spring or something like that.
I’m sure Rob Kovach or someone else has it on a SA

Edited
Read it had to do with 9mm extended ejectors, regardless, I think it will work fine.
I mean, they also recommend Remington “golden bullets”!! Lol

I have an AA on a Range Officer.  Works fine.  I did change the MSH stuff, and added a KC sear-hammer.
The AA has  Bob Marvel barrel.

I am running AA on Dan Wesson Specialist 9mm. So few things I noticed and would like to share.
- coating is not slick, it feels grippy velvety. Since it's everywhere (except for bolt underside where the disco channel is) the rails do not slide too well. It also catches carbon and is hard to clean.
- good machining and exact tolerances. Too much so. I had to lap the rails for smooth fit and bolt underside for proper ejector clearance. Polish mating surfaces as that coating they use did not feel right on action.
- Factory recoil spring is too stiff and is designed for use with HV load. They do sell reduced power spring, I did not try it. I cut down factory spring a bit (please no engineering comments how this does not work, it does work for wrong reasons )).
- I thennistalled 16lb mainspring and using a)13lb recoil spring for 9mm and b)factory cut AA spring for 22. Resulting action is smooth as silk and trigger has a pleasant let off (leaf spring tweaked of course).

Groups great similar to Marvel and Nelson.
Compared to Nelson and Marvel the AA is built tighter. That's my feel of it though. It feels better mated, though some machining may not be as intricate. I got it for about $250 off eBay and very happy. But then I liked tweaking it and making it precise fit, you may not. As it stands factory it is way too rough and your gun may not like it. Because Marvel and Nelson are loser (in the way bolt fits) the fit to gun is more forgiving.

Sorry for typos, my phone hates me ))

Oh, and almost forgot - AA billboard is ridiculous. Mine is now mirror polished slide(bolt)

I have 2 Marvel conversions that work well.  If you can find one for sale (they come up here commonly), that's a good option.  Both shoot around .5" for 10 shots at 50 yards.  That's better than anyone can hold offhand.

I want to thank everyone that responded both online and through private messages.  A club member has graciously allowed me to borrow his Nelson to see if I even like it.  I will give it a try before I make a final decision.  Thank  you for all the information on all the options
