Prior to 2005, International Rapid Fire allowed .22 Short. Still permissible for gallery bullseye, AFAIK.

Even the NRA killed off the .22 short.  First with the 40 gr. specification, now with:

Any .22 caliber rim fire long rifle cartridge may be used. Only bullets made of lead or similar soft material are permitted.

Wish they had just left it at ".22 caliber rim fire...." not that the accuracy of the .22 short was that great, its just sometimes fun to shoot.

I've still got quite a few bricks of RWS R-25.  Runs great in my HS .22 short Olympic (with that classy "Buck Rogers" barrel).

I didn't know that; thanks, Cecil.

Guess I'll have to build that .22 Short Gatling Gun after all.

40gr bullet weight no longer stipulated.  Rule 3.17 as noted by CR10X is correct.

Anyway, somebody needs to buy this before I get nostalgic and add another brick to my collection.

The NRA changed the .22 cartridge rules several times over the years from simply ".22 rim fire" to a 40 gr. bullet weight, then some other versions, and then to todays version with "long rifle" and no weight. When I started .22 short was still a viable option under the rules then.  Like John mentioned, quite a few gallery bullseye shooters used the round in .22 short target pistols.

They killed off the .22 short when they went to the 40 gr. bullet weight years ago.  I think they even did it before ISSF changed Rapid Fire to .22 LR.  The most recent change to just "long rifle" wasn't that long ago since there were numerous other weight .22 long rifle cartridges people apparently wanted to shoot.  (There was some 38 gr. lead standard velocity loads, and some heavier .22 silhouette loadings that shot ok.)

CMP “match Pistol” still requires 40 gr. FYI
Actually, not less than 40 gr
