Looked to be a reasonably good project gun if you are into stripping it completely down, cleaning and refinishing before a rebuild.  All of the edges looked sharp and the finish looked to be in tack on the vertical surfaces. The inside could look fine then it could have a dead snake skin in there.  Smile Can't comment about the price as I have no idea what a 52-1 might be worth.

I guess that it depends on what you want it for.

IMHO. If you have spare time and elbow grease. Clean it up, get rid of all the grime. Polish out the light rust, live with deeper surface pitting, cheap home bluing job. Might turn out to be a good shooter.

Worst case flip it back on GB and get your money back.

If the out sid look that bad it would need and new barrel and parts. then that $500 gun turns into a $1000 that still looks bad.

I agree with Rich. Looks like this gun saw salt water, maybe as a result of confiscation or flood in its previous life. Seller has 1911 just like this one too, so both came from same bucket. Everything is rust covered, even mags. Now if this is your truck gun, then whatever. It would probably shoot better than other guns in $500 range, even rusted.  I doubt any truck guns are wished in 38 special though)). As a gun it is meant to be (bullseye accurate) it would need a major restoration with probably more than just a barrel change. At this price it makes no sense, M52 in good condition could be had for $3-400 more. I agree that for lower price it would be a fun crapshoot project. Funny how the auction is still going, so this is not a final price.

Those just might be from my collection that was "lost in that terrible boating accident"!

Glad they found a good home! Smile

Full disclosure: I don't remember having an M52-1 though! Smile

It's usually cheaper in the long run to buy the best possible example you can afford.

I've been thinking of picking up a M52, and this one popped up in the Gunbroker saved search...wow, the price made sense very quickly!

First, having read the comments and then seeing the photos, it doesn't look as bad as it sounded. I would want to see some photos of the inside of the barrel and the interior of the slide and frame. I would also want to see if the adjustable sight is frozen or not. If the innards and rear sight are good to go, it wouldn't take that much for the pistol to look presentable. Most bullseye pistol shooters are much more interested in performance than looks. Personally, I wouldn't buy this from an online auction. I'd have to peel that banana and see what is under the skin.

that's a flood gun, we had a lot of those on Long Island after Hurricane Sandy (along with a lot "LOT" of Classic CARS). it was a very sad time for Classic Car and Classic Gun lovers like myself. yes it was in the Bay with the Oyster's.

Yes, Gun that has been in a flood. Barrel inside will be in same condition it was prior to flood once cleaned.  Bigger issue is the smallest of parts and of course springs

some of you Bullseye guys are tough on firearms,  esp the mil shooters,   What a Face

we bought a pile of Bullseye stuff from a retired shooter 6 yrs ago or so,
he was slated to shoot in the 1980 Olympics and shot for 2 branchs of service over the  years,

in the lot was maybe 7 pistol boxes, some full of guns, some full of parts,

almost every gun was in need of a good cleaning,  and some still showed the sweaty hand prints from the last time it was used,

didn't help that they sat in a storage unit in Norfolk for at least a few years,

most cleaned   up well,   all worked well to,

brother and I ended up keeping a few  for ourselves, including some Chow and Clark guns (and a HS Olympic space gun for me)

he mentioned they were just tools to him,  used them to get a score, and then put back in the box,

cleaned them when he felt it needed,  or not

WOW, a couple of years ago you could have bought a pretty decent one for 800 to 900. Maybe they got a deal.......

Is it the pandemic driving prices of these up?  Rarity?

I don't think I've ever seen a bulleye shooter actually using one of them.

That said, I want one and have been lurking on Gun Broker for a while.  A nice example with 2 magazines sold last night for $1100.  That seems to be where the market is right now.

all used,  with one (poly follower) extra mag,  for $1200 ea,

no box, wrench etc)

It's a wonderful, beautiful piece of history and engineering, all rolled into one, and it is SO much fun to shoot, while also being an unforgiving challenge.

I have two - one that came out of a gun safe, untouched for decades, and another I bought for $500 because nobody, including S&W, knew how to fix it.  That second one now has a red dot sight on it, and they both are (were?) a pleasure to shoot.  Looking forward to feeling safe enough to start shooting again.

The 52 has so much....  history....   behind it.  It's a classic.

Mike Myers nailed it, I've had one for about 4 years and It's a joy to shoot indoors in the winter in the off season for a change of pace. Very well made, recoil is almost non existent due to the slide mounted red dot. I've had many shooters comment on how neat it is to see someone shooting a 38 Special semi-auto and pick up empties from the net rather than off the bench from a revolver! When I shoot it I think of those skilled BE shooters using this pistol in competition while I was crawling around in diapers back in the good old days-it brings me back to an era I've only read about and not witnessed due to my age!

When you're on with your follow through it's a wonderful feeling to sink them in the ten ring  and when your're a little sloppy on the grip and follow through it lets you know right away and you get a good dose of humble pie!

I bought my Mod 52-2 around 40 years ago. When I was a young man, I was able to shoot it pretty well. I just returned to it after taking a hiatus for a few decades. When I returned to bullseye recently, shooting it was a challenge. Fortunately, the proper technique for it is coming back. Just takes some experimentation, time and practice.

Water damaged guns are a crap shoot if you can’t examine them in person. I bought a Series 70 1911 several years ago that looked terrible outside, the front sight was rusted off and there were very deep pits, almost penetrating the slide in places but the internals and barrel were pristine. You never know.
