Not my gun, just found this sale. Looks decent, figured one of you can use this.

That looks like a lot of weight going back and forth on the slide.

True, but there was a post here some time ago that doing this on a 52 was not a good idea.  The 45 has a lot more power to work with.

For my own 52, I removed the iron sights an mounted a Vortex Venom instead.  Small light weight mounts are available, and the gun works just as smoothly as my other 52 that still has the iron sights.  I bought the BME mounts from another user here who gave me a lot of information on how to get it working properly.  Actually, I bought two sight kits from him.  Once sighted in, the Vortex Venom was an excellent sight!  More information here:

I don't know if I was right or wrong for thinking that way, but I wanted the red dot sight system to weigh about the same as the stock iron sights I removed.  It worked out perfectly.

Umm, Model 52s normally come with 5 round mags, not 9 round.  This may be a typo in the add, but ...

The issues for me in selecting a reflex dot rather than a tube dot were I didn’t want to drill and tap the gun, and I didn’t want to have to restart-balance the pistol by adjusting the recoil spring.

The extra mass will require some more oomph to the ammo OR a reduction in recoil spring weight.  Adding oomph to the ammo will require adding powder.  There aren’t any WC cast or swaged that are heavier than 148 grain.  Factory ammunition likely won’t cycle the gun unless you re-spring.  Adding more powder INCREASES the probability that the dome will be blown off the top of a HBWC.  (Speer advised not to exceed 2.9-3.0 Bullseye in HBWC loads.). So for all of those reasons you have either a frame mount or a very lightweight requirement for a dot.  A reflex on an EGW plate fills those requirements.

I tried mounting a Matchdot II to my Mod. 52.  First, I tried a frame mount that replaces a grip.  I had to remove the mount and scope just to clean the pistol.  I really didn't having to regularly remove and reinstall pins.  Then, I got a mount from BME.  Knowing it probably wouldn't work, I tried with the standard recoil spring.  Didn't work.  I tried a couple of reduced recoil springs, but it still didn't work well.  The brass either hung up, or just fell out.  My brass catcher was useless.  Unfortunately, I had about 900 rounds of 148 grain, 2.7 grain Bullseye loaded and no more primers.  Upping the load wasn't an option.

I finally settled on what Wobbley did.  I got an EGW plate and a reflex.  I went with the Vortex Razor, because 1. you can lock down the elevation and windage adjustments, 2. windage and elevation adjustments are made with an allen wrench, and 3. uncharacteristically easy battery replacement - just pull out a tray from the side.  A nice, practical arrangement.

I have to agree that having that much mass on an S&W52 slide is a bit too much.  There are alternative available for the folks who LOVE their 52s and want to shoot optics.

If you want to retain your iron sights, consider the BME-BWR.  It attaches at the front using the same grooves used by the barrel weights.  The set screw uses the same dimple used for those barrel weights.

If you don't mind swapping your rear sight for a scope mount, there a few more options available in which you would use smaller, reflex-type optics or a standard-size red dot.

I shoot with a friend who uses one of these BME mounts and he definitely loves it!

30mm UltraDot on BME -RR mount. 2.7g WST works great.
