WTB 90 degree facing cutter and 11 degree crown for .22 rimfire
Hello all!
Im about to take possession on a .22 pistol that a previous owner “worked” on. Barrel has been cut and has no crown at all.
I don’t have a lathe available, so looking for something like the Brownells set up.
I wanted to cut the barrel face flat so I know I have a good baseline.
Does anyone have one lying about? If so, what size is the pilot bearing?
Thanks,
Rob

Honestly, if it’s a removable barrel, for the cost of the tooling, a good Smith can face and crown it better than you’ll get with hand cutters.

It will be harder to work on if it's a fluted barrel. How long is the remaining section?

It’s a High Standard removable barrel. It’s got about 4.25 inches left. I called a gunsmith I know and he said he could do it for around $20. I’ll let him do it for that price. I’m usually the guy that will spend the money on the tool instead so I can do it again, but for $20, I can’t pass that up.

Honestly, see how it shoots. A flat face and minimal crown doesn’t always indicate bad accuracy. Many old target rifles were much the same.

Thanks Jim! I’ll do that before I try to fix it. Sorry for the pun, but “it’s worth a shot!” I’ll show myself out now…

There was an article in a Gun Digest years ago about barrel length vs velocity. They sawed the barrel off an inch at a time, and deburred it with a case chamfering tool. It shot about as well as with a proper crown.
I shot one with the original end face on the blank. Still had the bulge from the button coming out. Shot just fine.
