Time for a new reloading press, moving from a single stage to either a turret or progressive. Appreciate your thoughts
First topic message reminder :
I’ve always received thoughtful advice from this forum so thought perhaps i would check here first.
I recently received a gift certificate for several hundred dollars which was completely unexpected and very much appreciated.
I’ve been reloading on the Forster Co-Ax press for quite a few years now and it has served me well. I truly am pleased with it. That said, it does take me a very long time to reload many of the pistol calibers and i don’t like to have to unscrew and reorrient the case holder every time i change caliber.
I’ll keep using the Forster Co-Ax for rifle and for smaller production numbers as the loads have been very good and accurate but a single stage is a lot of work.
I’d like the press to be able to load 9mm, 38 special, 45acp without too much hassle in changing calibers.
I thought perhaps to use the gift certificate and add another few hundred dollars to transition to a turret or progressive press.
I read a few pages of posts on this forum but they’re a few years old now and thought perhaps there were other or different presses that i should consider…..and perhaps these newer presses might have shown evolving concerns or dissatisfaction.
Shooting little groups is a priority and i do not wish to trade quality for volume…. but if i could have my “cake and eat it too” well that would be great.
I hope to keep cost to less than $1350 for the press and critical associated parts if possible.
I already have dies, powder measure, scale, digital caliper, chamfer/deburring tools and requisite case gauges
…As such, that would exclude the Mark 7 or Dillon 1100 models which are much more expensive.
I asked several shooters at the range and the models they thought i should consider were:
The Frankford Arsenal X10, which seems to run apx. $1000
Area 419 turret press, which seems to run apx. $1200
Dillon XL 750, which seems to run apx. $1100
I’d prefer to purchase modern presses that come with a warranty and customer support.
I’m open to suggestions.
thank you

I think you stated having a disability of some description?brand-new wrote:Glad you posted this, I reviewed a video on the x-10 press but thought the lever excursion to be a bit long and hard on the shoulder? Do you find it so or perhaps easier to effect than on the Dillon?
I have spine and shoulder troubles.
I have owned or still own 3 Hornady progressives. Still have a Projector and a LnL. They work fine.
However priming on the up stroke aggravates the heck out of my shoulder, especially with some of the foreign primers.
The Dillon 1050 primes on the down stroke, much easier on my messed up joints. Much better depth adjustment as well.
Don't know about the FA X10 but I'd save up for something that primes where the press mechanical advantage like the 1050/1100.
I did make a funnel that rode up and down in the station where the PM would be on one of the Hornadys, stop at the bottom and drop your weighed charge. The funnel just sat in the top of the press waiting for the next round to ride up and down. That was for rifle rounds back when I was shooting HP a lot...before the all the spine issues. I also discovered my scores went up after I gave up on making perfect rounds instead of almost perfect rounds in quantity, adding that time to practicing with more rounds fired. Just making sure they were reliable.
There are lots of tweeks you can do for them all. I made a swage hold down that does the expanding and slight bell at that station instead of at powder drop.
Photoescape makes powder funnels that work well with lead bullets in the Dillon PM if you go that route.
Sorry for the ramble, hope you find success!

Personally, I find the stroke to be easier. It is longer than the Dillon, but I think it's smoother. To me it seems that the press has more leverage. In fact, that's why I went to the Mark 7 powder check. I had been using the RCBS, but I felt that the press could overpower its mechanical stop if I was not paying attention and the Mark 7 has an audible warning. Also, at the beginning of the upstroke, I had to jerk the Dillon and the Hornady handles to get the case out of the sizing die if I did not lubricate my brass. Not so with the x-10.
Not mentioned so far in this thread, caliber change is slower with the x-10.

The Dillion 550 is the best for 32-45 cal. ammo. Easy to change out, check your power every 10 rounds along with the over all length. Yes you have to rotate the shell holder , but you get to check over the process as it happens.

Thank you all so very much.
I did order a Dillon XL750, albeit without the case feeder to save some money. Scheels had a free shipping sale.
Perhaps in the future i'll be able to secure a case feeder. I read that some use a tube case system sold by Lee that can work with the press. I thought perhaps I would save up for one, maybe next month as they're not terribly expensive.
The Dillon press should be a good tool as so many have recommended the Dillon line and this model has been out for some time now.

Congratulations on the 750! See PhotoEscape's website for some goodies. I had priming issues with mine until I bought his brass primer magazine tips

thank you. i'm looking forward to getting it set up. A friend has kindly offered to help me mount the press this weekend
...i just google'd the words: "photoescape brass primer magazine tips"
but unfortunately i'm not able to find anything. If you have the time and if it's ok to post the link that would help (if its not ok to post commercial links then perhaps pm me with the information. thank you) .
