22 lr bullet diameters
Once I got a batch of Federal AutoMatch that shot all over-very inaccurate. Turned out the bullet diameters were consistently .002"+ less than my other (several) brands of 22lr ammo. --- Federal made it right-another story. --- next automatch purchase: diameters were A-OK>
with my cheap, but calibrated(?) dial caliper:
Just now checking my 22lr ammos (winter leagues coming)- all .023"min-.024"+ - Except for: White & red box AGuila: .022". -- The white & blue & red box Aguila is .023". - This afternoon I'll do 50' rest-test accuracy comparison of the two Aguilas-see if there's any difference.
If there is a difference, I'll report back. - - Pistol: 5" Pardini Bullseye.
More darn fun, Russ

Aguila Ammo- Have 5000 rounds that only fit one 22 lr gun. Bullet diameter, oversize.

small dia Aguila & GEco 22lr rifle tested
Like the people that know say: Test your ammo-find out what you pistol likes
Rest-testing This afternoon: all groups - 15 shots
My 5" Pardini Bullseye DID NOT DO WELL WITH the SMALLER DIAMETER AGUILA BULLETS (.022" & .023").
Same Pistol definitely did better with .024"-diameter Geco 22lr rifle.
Best group of the afternoon:
5.5" Buckmark "Target" model with the same Aguilas- the .022" dia - .88" o'all - one hole.

Thanks. I thought that that was the case, since you mentioned indoor match preparation, but I wasn't certain.Russ OR wrote:Mike asked - Distance?

I'd say your .022" diameter .22"s are a bit on the skinny side.

Just a note about velocity. I'm sure bullet diameter will alter chamber pressure and therefore velocity. The more constant the velocity the better the group size.
At the range Adam runs they do have a few outstanding shooter along with the dummies that don't know the first thing about shooting.
They just had a .22LR rifle match, X ring 1" range 100yards. They had 6 people shoot a perfect score all Xs. A woman that woman that won High Woman but not the match shot 51 Xs in a row! I didn't ask but that might have been a tie breaker. They claim Lapua Midas and Eley Black Box have the best consistent accuracy. SK Red Box has a few flyers. When they practice they have Garmin Chronographs set-up and judge errors by velocity when using cheaper ammo.
So if best ammo is desired Lapua Midas and Eley Black Box is best.
Not sure if it's known but head stamp on Lapua and SK are exactly the same, Adam noticed it when he and were comparing cartridge diameters, Adam also noticed that everything on the box the rounds come in is exactly the same except the name. There is so much the same that it's very possible Lapua is making SK or possibly someone else is making both.

Re: 22 lr bullet diameters
I believe that different .22 caliber guns often shoot better with different ammo. Lot numbers can also make a difference in accuracy. Most of these differences are found in rifles. Our good pistols will shoot good ammo well within the 10 rings at 50 yards. It seems to me that since we shoot a lot more pistol ammo than, say, rifle shooters we are always searching for cheap .22 ammo that performs like match quality ammo. There's nothing wrong with that, especially when we want to find decent practice ammo, but we need to keep in mind that we can't "make a silk purse out of a sow's ear". I believe I remember someone who went to a lot of trouble and expense to find which lot number of a certain Eley brand shot best out of his pistol. I can't remember if he concluded that it was worth it. For competition, Jerry Chaney and I (I used to shoot matches against him) used CCI Pistol Match in our Hammerli 208s pistols. I confirmed by using a Ransom Rest at 50 yards that it would hold the X ring. It was unnecessary to use it, but it gave me a psychological boost, just knowing.

RUAG owns Lapua and SK and RWS. AFAIK all the 22 ammo is loaded up in the same plant. So your R50 and Lapua Midas are loaded in the same plant.
