Is this repairable? Empty Is this repairable?

Post by javaduke Mon Dec 16, 2024 9:50 am

A customer brought a nice High Standard Victor, the gun is in perfect shape, but one of the magazines is broken. Wondering if this is repairable, in theory it should be because all I see is two roll pins holding this in place. But is it possible to obtain a spare part?

Several years ago there was someone on this list that was selling replacement bases that were metal.  I think they were machined aluminum and could be had in different colors.  Not sure if they are still making/selling them but you could start your search there.  They (or someone) may sell them on ebay.  You could also try Interarms to see if they sell replacements.

Good Luck,
John

Liquid medical grade ether will melt the plastic and work as a glue. Just a drop and then hold it together for a few seconds will glue it solid in most cases.

Huh, $4 part and $13 shipping, wow...
Maybe I will try to 3d print it first, carbon fiber should work.

Crazy glue will work wonders here. I would do that first.

The ones Interarms sells, have to be glued to the base of the magazine.  I found some on eBay a couple years ago, that had to projections that fit the holes on the bottom of the magazine and worked without any glue.  I got three of them for $10, delivered.  Pretty sure the guy used a 3D printer to make them.  Sadly, I have not seen them since.

Is this repairable? Empty High Standard Factory Magazines

Post by alaronstein Sat Dec 21, 2024 1:33 am

The SIMPLE answer is  !!!!! If that base says "High Standard" or "X-Series" and it is on a Texas marked magazine, it is a warranty issue. - Alan Aronstein

The base says "High Standard", but there are no markings on the magazine. The gun is marked "Houston, TX".

I've recently used Gorilla brand super glue for the first time. It is amazing what it will join and how hard it will hold very unmatched parts.

Henkel/Loctite has now come out with a gel type super glue that has some flexibility when cured. It really works.

I have repaired similar plastic breaks as well as metal. A name brand clear epoxy is good if fix is to be nearly invisible. I will drill a hole in one item, more if possible and insert a pin with epoxy, pin size depends on item size. Then drill a larger hole and fill it with epoxy as well as the surfaces to be joined. Larger hole is so pin don't have to align perfectly with the pin. Wipe all excess epoxy, secure with tape or rubber-band. After epoxy hardens drill and pin another hole where if the 2 holes were drilled assembly was not possible, put epoxy in hole and on pin and insert pin or pins. After hardening the item is as good as new if not stronger

The base design changed over the years.  I repaired a few magazines a couple years ago.  There was a steel bottom, and a red plastic base that had two pins that went into holes in the steel base plate.  The plastic section had busted off.  It was pretty straight forward to tap the holes in the baseplate, and attach a 3D printed base with a couple screws, similar to the aluminum ones shown in the photos.  If the plastic bases ever bust, it's trivial to replace them once the bottom is tapped.  If folks are interested, I can put the magazine base design up on Thingiverse.

The original question was about a different design of magazine, where the entire base is plastic, and is held by two roll pins.  It's certainly worth trying glue of some sort, but if Hi Standard will cover it under warranty, that's even better.

Check the magazine for a heat Treat code inside in the Button removal area. Also check for our tringle inspection mark on the outside near the base retainer pins. Alan Aronstein

Or, just use it as it is. If you looking for cosmetics then you will want to repair it. I doubt if that will change whether it works. I've got a jumbled collection of magazines and the only important feature was that they worked. I found a brand new HD Military magazine and cut off the extra tail. I've added screws so I could remove them from the magazine well (very long grips) and kept my eye on ebay for good deals.

I would take the two pins out and cut a piece of 16ga. metal that will cover both pieces and epoxy it onto both pieces on the back side and the broken join.
