1911 Slide Mount That Allows Irons to Stay in Place
Anyone have an idea? I'm getting a wadgun eventually and I'd like to have the option to easily switch it back and forth from dot to iron sights.
I see the Kodiak Aimpoint 9000 mount but it doesn't look like it has clearance for a rear Bomar style sight to stay in place while the dot is mounted.
I'm looking to avoid a big top rib/rail/sight combo

Accuracy X can do a slide with the multi-sight system. It’s a feature on their guns but available as a slide only if you’re on a budget.

Check out Rock River Arms. They make a slide mounted rib with a Picatinny rail and target sights. You would have to have your slide drilled and tapped. Rock River can do that job for you. Do not have just any gunsmith try to drill and tap your slide. it must be done by a gunsmith who knows what he is doing to get everything set up correctly.

You can modify a standard rail to work, you just need to be careful with the screws when converting back and forth to avoid stripping them/over-tightening and shearing them off. The accuracy x option is also valid but also not trivial/convenient to swap back and forth quickly. Both methods may have some zero shift when switching back to a dot. Combo rails are also a possibility and the simplest but most (not all) have an additional reciprocating weight penalty. This is why people that like shooting both metallic and optics often have dedicated guns for each, lots of inconvenient compromises to do both.

While it will work for shooting irons and optics, I don’t think having a rail or an optic mount attached meets the criteria of a “Service Pistol” under CMP rules. I believe the Accuracy X Multi Sight system can. If that was your intention.

Rock River combo rail is legal for 2024 service pistol rules if the gun makes weight.Wobbley wrote:While it will work for shooting irons and optics, I don’t think having a rail or an optic mount attached meets the criteria of a “Service Pistol” under CMP rules. Looks like the best ready-to-go solution is the combo rail. Anyone have any idea what a 6" combo rail looks like? The wadgun i'm going to get is a long slide and it looks like RRA has a 6" combo rail.

The RRA rails fit the hole pattern of later BOMAR rails. If your existing rail (if equipped) needs a “Lockup tuner” you can get your RRA rail with one of those too.

Keep in mind the RRA rail is HEAVY. Running an optical on it requires a pretty stout load. I have a solution, possibly. PM me.

Pretty sure a long slide doesn't qualify for EIC anyway.

The RR Bullseye Rib (iron sights) and the RR rail (for a red dot) are steel and aluminum respectively and have the exact same hole pattern. The rail plus Warne rings plus an Ultradot (1.0 inch model) are within a couple tenths of an ounce, of the Bullseye rib weight. A bit of time to swap over but the weights are close enough that I can use the exact same load and same springs throughout, for both options. I am referring to the five inch version. My shoulder is shaking at the thought of a six inch Bullseye Rib.

Jared, you’re still going to run your P210 in SP matches, right? Current rules are 5.5” barrel limit for Service Pistol.
The 6” rib is a viable option if you’re able to put up with the weight, cut weight elsewhere on the gun, or tolerate the need for a bit stouter of a load. There might be options to cut weight on the gun or in the rib, so if you have a machinist buddy, consider that.
I ran a RRA combo rib on a 5” though 2024. It’s heavy. Barely made SP weight limits without the dot. Return to zero when remounting microdots (Sig Romeo 5 and Romeo 4) was excellent. A couple clicks at 50 at most, sometimes zero. Set the sight mount crossbar consistently and use a torque wrench, and there isn’t much to go wrong in that respect.
The sprung rear sight leaf will need to be compressed to mount a microdot behind the ejection port (I’m presuming you’re not going to slap a 9000SC on a heavy 6” gun…). So long as the elevation screw and detent remain engaged with each other, the sight returns to zero perfectly when the dot is removed.

Depending on what optic you plan on running, you have the potential of a significant amount of reciprocating mass. Are you buying an existing gun or having one built?jareds06 wrote:Looks like the best ready-to-go solution is the combo rail. Anyone have any idea what a 6" combo rail looks like? The screws holding the rails do not have a lot of purchase forward of the ejection port, like 2-3 threads. Giving up a rear screw with full engagement to leave the irons intact makes things substantially weaker.

Re: 1911 Slide Mount That Allows Irons to Stay in Place
I have made quite a few slide mount scope mounts that will allow iron sights to remain on the pistol. However the mount has to be removed to use the irons. Replacing the mount will probably require re-sighting the scope. Probably almost perfect but should be checked before shooting.
I don't know of any slide mount that will allow the use of irons without removing the mount except those that have irons incorporated in the mount but original rear sight has to be removed.

That's what I'm looking for basically. I want to shoot metallic sights in the 2700 at least for this year and then switch to a dot probably next yearFroneck wrote:I have made quite a few slide mount scope mounts that will allow iron sights to remain on the pistol. jareds06; may I ask why you want to shoot irons in NRA 2700? You don't have classification posted but do have quite a few medals, are you triple distinguished?

OK so you do have the 3 medals and want to win a Metalic sight match?

Yeah, I probably could have last year if I applied myself a little more and wasn't borrowing a gun for the CF and .45 900.Froneck wrote:OK so you do have the 3 medals and want to win a Metalic sight match?

Re: 1911 Slide Mount That Allows Irons to Stay in Place
OK! Good luck, I hope you win! Another option is to do something like the .22 conversion. Get another slide barrel and complete assembly including the recoil spring fitted to your slide then all you do is change slides from scope mount to irons sights and back without the need to worry about re-sighting.But if your a gun nut like me it's a good excuse to get another 1911.

I would love to have on with the Pardini sight and ribs on the Bottom like a HS Victor.
