Cylinder Reaming
Does anyone have any contact information for a pistolsmith that can ream tight cylinders on a S&W? My model 10 has 2 cylinders that consistently throw shots out of the group fro a ransom rest.
Cheers,
Steve

Re: Cylinder Reaming
I assume you are referring only to the cylinder THROATS and not the entire chamber? If so….
Doug Phillips.
Find him on the “castboolit” forum.
He prefers folks sign up on that forum and contact him that way. I lost his email anyway.
Amazing work. Has always brought my throats to within .0005 of each other.

Re: Cylinder Reaming
Are you sure it is the Cylinders? Could be the timing. Do properly sized and or factor ammo fit in the cylinders?

Re: Cylinder Reaming
Yes, it’s the cylinders, I have to tap a .358” bullet thru it.

This guy seems to lean towards single action guns, but does a great job reaming cylinder throats. Seems to me, a hole's a hole.

Re: Cylinder Reaming
You can rent a reamer from these guys and do it yourself. I did it a few years ago with a Ruger Blackhawk and it turned out pretty well. Give a try if you are mechanically inclined.

That’s huge news (to cast bullet shooters). If someone else doesn’t turn up to fill Doug’s shoes, I won’t buy another revolver unless the seller will let me bring my pin gauges. The reduction (elimination) of leading and improvement in accuracy is THAT significant when you uniform and match cylinder throats to your slugged groove diameter. My 14-3 went from typical 3.5 inch to 1.5 inch fifty yard Ransom Rest groups. I’ve got a .48 inch twenty five yard group as well. I’ve used reamers to do the job myself but Doug was a master with his Sunnen hone. Disappointing news. I think Mike Heffron does this with his accuracy package but his queue is now a couple of years and I don’t think he squeezes in smaller jobs like KC and others do.

Re: Cylinder Reaming
Try Alex Hamilton of Ten-Ring Precision in San Antonio Texas also. It may be as simple sending in the cylinder. He relined a S&W M41 barrel for me.

A local pistolsmith who is now retired matched all of the cylinder throats and Taylor throated the barrels of my M14-3 and M586-3. If I remember correctly both had three or four chambers that were near the correct size and two that were undersized.
