Which 38 Revolver do you think has a great trigger for Bullseye
Hello
I'm looking for a 38 revolver for my wife for Bullseye competition.
she has a 45 that i make some pretty soft loads for but i feel that she would be better off starting out with a 38 and working her way up to the 45
any suggestions would be appreciated

Most common 38 revolvers on the line are older Smith 14's and Colt OMM's. Both are excellent. If she intends to shoot sustained double action, the Smith is easier to tune. The Colt has a faster twist barrel, and the SA triggers are excellent.
Another option (if you have the funds) is a Manurhin. Again, the older ones may be better. The sights are wonderful compared to the Smiths and Colts.

It definitely has to be a SA for timed and rapid
I’ve looked at Manurhin revolvers they are too pricey for a experiment I’d like to start her off with something half the price

Model 14 probably most available.
I’ve not evaluated the new Colt products.

If you can, find a gunshop near you that has both a Colt Python and a S&W 10/17/19 or any other K frame variant. Have her see which one she has an easier job thumbing the hammer on. The S&W K frame is technically smaller than the Colt E/I frame, however I had an easier time manipulating the hammer on the Colt. If she likes the Python, but doesn't like the weight, the old OMM use the same frame size but are much less front heavy.
I have a 62 OMM and a 2020 Python. The OMM has a beautiful Single Action trigger that hasn't needed any work, but the infamous stacking double action. The newer python came with a HEAVY 5.5# single action, but for about $200 Frank Glenn got it down to the 2.5# needed for DR. The newer pythons have a much more linear double action.
The only Smith I have is a performance center 625 loaned by a friend. It too has a great trigger, but I struggle more with the hammer.

I don’t see her cocking a hammer on timed and rapid I’ll probably have to look at a semi in 38 cal

Grips that fit the hand make shooting revolvers much easier and enjoyable to shoot.

I owned a 1952 Colt OMS, a S&W M586 and a S&W M14 all at the same time. While the Colt OMS shot the best at 50 yards and had a big double cockeyed hammer spur that was almost impossible to miss, I sold it as the M14 frame and grips fit my hand better.
I suspect one of the previous owners of the Colt OMS knew a good revolversmith or there was a good day at the factory as the DA pull was very good and the SA was extremely good. My problem was the frame/grip made it hard for me to shoot SA and I needed to down-size my collection.

I have a M19 and it is a great gun. GP 100 are not bad and very well made.

If only indoor, Smith 52. If Outdoor, custom 38 1911.

EGW makes a red dot base that replaces the rear sight. Unfortunately, it only works with the small reflex sights such as Burris and Vortex. A tube type requires drilling the slide unless you can find the old mount that attaches to the weight slots. I haven’t seen one of this for sale in years.Hdfatb wrote:I’ve been looking at S&W 52

2.7 Bullseye or 2.7-2.8 WST with a 148 HBWC will get the job done. Just be aware it is a bit more involved loading HBWCs than typical pistol projectiles.Hdfatb wrote:Thank you I think the S&W 52 is the way to go

Yeah, the company was BME that made the 52 sight cut mount. They shut down and were bought, but looks like the new company didn't work out:

I have one of their picatinny mounts that fits in the sight cut. Works fine with an aimpoint H1. All that said, Dane Hogle and Doug Hall came up with a no drill mount for a 52 that fits the frame shroud weight cut. Might want to look them up. Nice since the mount doesn't reciprocate, and you don't need to worry about changing your load.
