Found some 231 Empty Found some 231

Found 1lb of 231 in my dad's old reloading supplies, it must be at least 20 years old and never opened (still haven't).  It sounds nice and loose when I shake it.  Is there a way to check it's age?  I'm just interested in how old it is not really thinking about using it.

20 Years?  I'm loading out of cannisters of 231 and Bullseye I've owned since the mid 80s.  Makes it about 30 years.

EXACTLY like the can my Dad and I bought in 1983 (wrote the date on the can, but I'm sure there's a date code in the lot stamp) and finally wiped out about 2009.

Loads with that stuff chrono'd within 20 fps or so of the speeds we got with a new lot about four years ago. Both .45 and 9mm.

Grumpy,

I would like to buy / trade for that 231. I have lots of .308 ammo (Factory) to trade. As well as
.45 SWC factory ammo.

Jerry:

It's all in cartridge cases awaiting being lit up.

". . .the can my Dad and I bought in 1983 . . . and finally wiped out about 2009."

All I have left is maybe 2 ounces from a 1-lb jug I found last year. My posts on various forums would pin down the dates and quantities, but I believe I have seen only 4 pounds of 231 on the shelf anywhere, over three instances (they vanish in 48-72 hours), in five different retail establishments in the last two years.

I'm down to the last 3# of Bruce Hogdon's surplus 4831 that dates back to WWII. No I didn't buy it fresh, got it from a reloading mentor who got out of reloading 20+ yrs ago.  By far the best powder I tried for my 300WM and 30-06 loads.

And to stay on topic, my oldest pistol powder is a can of Unique, price tag of $5 from back in the med 70's.

Back in the late 1950 - late 1980s, Dad and I went through two 100 pound kegs of H4831.

Actually lately I have run into quite a bit of powder at Cabelas and another LGS (SM).  No BE but some WST, N310, Varget, 4064, 4350, 4895, even some TG and 1# 2400.
