Ever Had A Gun Cerakoted? Empty Ever Had A Gun Cerakoted?

Post by Tim:H11 Wed Mar 08, 2017 2:40 pm

Has anyone here ever had their pistols Cerakoted? If so then did it effect function, reliability, and or accuracy?

I plan on having my Ruger MKIII cerakoted because the finish is worn and the grip is browning and looks nasty.

Actually, I just did the lower for my conversion myself.  No problems with function but naturally the slide to frame fit for the conversion is fairly loose to begin with.  I am suprised to find that it has not worn off the frame rails yet.  Seems to be a very tough finish, much more so than duracoat.  That's the graphite black BTW.

if done properly no affect on function.. It's a very thin product (.001)

find a qualified applicator... Cerakote has a list of approved applicators on their web site.

Way better than Duracoat...

on a normal wad gun you would not want to apply it to the frame rails even at .001 it will make the gun rough and way too tight..

On a sloppy loose Ruger you will have no issues.

My MKIII has to be beat with a hammer to get the barreled action on and off the gun.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the function of the pistol. I'm talking about the sloppy bolt and sloppy guts.

Oh well then I don't think there will be an issue. So long as the bolt stays polished I think.

1911 they have to tape the rails then is not a problem and very durable. You will want to make sure the refinisher is experienced, competent and has the right equipment. Not correct for wad guns but if you tape the rails it should be ok.

I wasn't impressed with the Cerakote finish over some of the other wonder finishes.

Interesting article on Cerakote with some photos.

Some years ago I acquired a MK II that someone had bubbasmithed the bull barrel and had allowed the frame to become pitted. I stripped the frame and applied Duracoat as directed.  It held up for the year of so that I used it for a NMC league.
