Less expensive SV .22 experience?

I've been a long time user of CCI SV with decent groups and very few problems. Yes, I know you shouldn't mess with what works, but I'm wondering about less expensive standard velocity ammunition. Specifically has anyone had any experience with Armscor, Federal Champion Target or Fiocchi?

Aguila produces a little larger groupings and an occasional failure to feed for me.

Fiocchi Subsonic HP works for me.

I just got a case of CCI SV delivered for under $310, that just over $.06 a shot, why mess with what works.

But I usually can tell a good shot even if it is with crappy ammo.

Mine case in 100 round plastic cases too.

ewwwww 0032 plastic box.... not 0035 paper box... but hey i'm gonna order some.

Lol I have an older master shooting buddy the swears the plastic box shoots better. Personally I don't care too much, I do hate how the paper box just has the single layer plastic top. I end up keeping one of the black plastic cradles that SK and other nicer 22's come in, you can drop the paper box tray in that so they all stay put.

I've been very happy with Aguila Super Extra. Targetsports USA has it for $22/brick. Free shipping on a case. It's running perfect in my Nelson.

I do like the 100 count boxes but have a large quantity of the 50 round box ammo so I just transfer that to my used 100 count boxes for trips to the range.

+1 I also transfer to the 100 round plastic. They are 10 times easier to get ammo metered out of during a match.

If you're in California, I hope you all have stocked up. For now, since Jan1, we can't buy any ammo statewide. You need an ammo card and they aren't available yet.

at one time I believe the CCI plastic 100 box ammo was made at a different factory from the paper box stuff... today ..same factory

If you get a Type 03 FFL (curio & relic) and a California Certificate of Eligibility (COE), then you can still have ammo shipped to your door.  LAX Ammo, being in CA understands this, but as usual other places won't bother to understand our complicated and convoluted guns laws and won't ship to CA.

I noticed California has not abolished the infamous 'gun shows'.  The last one I went to in November had the Aguila standard velocity ammo at $210/case.  Since the case weights ~ 40 lb, I decided not to lug that out to my car and opt for mail order instead - since it's an option.  I've yet to buy a case.

I've bought cases of .22lr target ammo out of state.  I think there may be a law in Virginia that if you say the .22lr ammo is for a pistol, you need to show an ID at purchase - but that may just be for Walmart's in certain cities.  Politics is so very goofy.

They like the revenue too much. The venues like the fees and the counties like the sales tax.

Bob, I have heard that this is the case but haven't seen anything definitive yet. If the ammo vendors won't ship, it's a moot point.

I stocked up a bit on .22 in order to wait out the inevitable CA DOJ CF.

This is a question that has always puzzled me.  We pour a lot of money into our pistols seeking superior accuracy, then we try to feed it cheap ammo????  Where does that make any sense?

The only thing I would be concerned about is the average velocity.  Most standard velocity ammo is under 1200 fps.  Some closer to 1000 fps.  Gun manufacturers do not specify a brand and type of ammunition (generally) but some specify standard velocity only. 

As an example, back in the 70's (before the EPA shut down all the JROTC indoor ranges) we shot Remington 40x and a few Anschutz rifles.  This was sponsored by the ROTC program, and the ammunition provided by them.  That ammunition was typically Winchester Wildcat with some T22 mixed.  It was never a problem.  Of course, these were single shot bolt action rifles and I dare say some of the higher end Anschutz with the 54 actions would shoot ~ 1,000,000 rounds before accuracy dropped on an indoor range.

This stuff runs flawlessly in my S&W41, High Standard M107, and Hämmerli 280. Seems almost as accurate as CCI SV indoors.

If a case of Tenex is $2000 and a box of Federal Gold Medal 45 is $40, the ammo ends up costing more than gun.

For practice I shoot Norma Tac-22.  It's cheap and better than holds the 10 ring at 50 yards.  It's usually right on call.  

For matches I shoot Eley Target that I bought cheap.  The Eley shoots just a little more accurate in the Ransom Rest than does the Tac-22.  

An expensive and accurate gun won't loose much value and will provide a lifetime of service as I use it to increase my skills.  I will use more accurate ammo in matches when my skills are equal to it and the gun.  For me that will be when I average 95 or better at slow fire.

 Indoors 50 ft / OD 25 yd that $2.25 per box Aguila will shoot a clean target just like a $23 box of Eley Tenex. why waste a huge amount of money for maybe a few more X's unless you are a 890+ shooting HM.

I've found TAC-22 and Fiocchi SV to run and shoot very good for me in my Benelli. Still hard to beat the CCI SV sale prices < 300 case and Aguilla SV for cost.

A friend gave me a box of Aquila Super Fine SV (1130 fps) to try in my Pardini and I liked it so much that I just bought my second case, $219 delivered (Aquila SV). The stiff is very accurate (better than CCI in my Pardini) and slightly faster than most other SV ammo. The only complaint, and it is not really a complaint, is the ammo is slightly dirtier than commonly used target stuff. Cheers, dipnet
