Optimum velo for Zero/Nosler jkt 185? Empty Optimum velo for Zero/Nosler jkt 185?

Post by bruce martindale Tue May 14, 2019 4:06 pm

I see we need another ammo topic....l see all kinds of loads out there

5.1 WST gets me almost 900 fps,
4.2-700x around 730

4.6 be, l forget

Is there a sweet spot?

Also what about dies? Pull force from full crunch RCBS carbide sizers gets me 50 fps faster than a less sized shell from a Casull die but the latter look better and lak the wasp waist.

I may RR test some for fun
Thanks

Atlanta Arms lists 920 fps on their 185 JHP AMU load. I'm not sure if they use Nosler or Zero bullets but I would imagine they react similarly to the same FPS.

Hello bruce martindale,

Anything even close to 900 feet per second is way too fast (snappy recoil).  For the best accuracy, I would aim for 780 feet per second.  Achievable with....

   4.5 grains of Bullseye
   4.2 grains of CLAYS
4.2 grains of Vihta Vuori N310

Does the sizing die really make any type of difference?  I would think that the diameter of your expander/funnel and the amount of crimp are the controlling variables.

Bruce, the Federal Gold Medal Match 185 gr, a highly accurate cartridge, states 780 fps on the box.
I chrono'd the Zero factory ammo , 185 jhp, at 824 fps.

I chrono'd the Federal 185 GM match and got AV 736.
I buy a box now and then to use as a benchmark.
I compare my reloads to the factory match.

The load that Dave Salyer gave me eons ago was 4.5 gr. of Alliant Bullseye. It produces 829 fps. out of my Clark accurized Heavy Slide with Kart barrel and bushing with UltraDot mounted on the slide. I have found that it groups very well with a variety of good accurized pistols. One of our club members upped it to 4.6 grains with excellent results from a new Rock River wad gun. All the results were obtained from a Ransom Rest at 50 yards. I also found that, when I was competing, the 4.5 gr. Bullseye/ Nosler shot very well for me out of the hand.
