Knowing the KKM 1:32 barrels like snappy 9mm ammo, are ANY of the cheaper factory ammo brands capable at 25 yds? Blazer, etc? 25 yds or even 50 ft would be fine for practice.  Not expecting any magical 50 yd results with cheap stuff.  Is it worth trying anything heavier than 115 gr?

From memory, 32 twist shot fine with cheap Federal 115gr ammunition at 25 yds.

You could try 124s if you can get them cheaply- but I bet they will tumble; maybe not at 25, but probably at 50.

A club member picked up an Accuracy X 1911 with a 1:32 barrel that he is using to get his last leg points. I helped him with replicating the ammo that shot well in that gun, which was Atlanta Arms 115 (no surprise- it's hot). We did some shooting using the chrono, and he was able to duplicate the velocity he was getting from factory- that was accurate, but expensive- which was some BE under a 115gr IIRC. I believe he tried some 124s in it, and they were all over the place.

I could be misremembering the experience, but my impression from helping him was one is severely handicapped with a 1:32 barrel. It likes one thing, and seemingly one thing only.

YMMV.

Whoops- sorry; realized I answered the second question and not the first.

I got a bunch of service pistol points using a 1911 9mm and Atlanta Arms 115 ammo. I tried a bunch of different reloads and factory fodder for practice and for record. I didn't feel restricted using whatever was on the shelf for the short line with 115. I do most of my practice indoors at 20 yards, and I don't remember any particular brand being something I wouldn't shoot again. I shot a lot of Blazer aluminum believe it or not, and even got some leg points with it (shot the AL on the short line, to be clear).

Believe what the target says. A couple of boxes of ammo and a couple of strings of fire will tell you everything you need to know.

A good friend of mine won the PACFLT match and made P100 several times using Remington UMC. He was 280+ consistently with it. When he first got his KIDD 92fs there was no match 9mm in the system and he had to use factory ammo. Pretty sure he said he bought it at Walmart because he's also "frugal."

I watched a guy shoot a 95 at 50 yards using M882 ball ammo at PACFLT. Once again no match 9mm in 2000. He didn't do that everytime but once is enough to prove it can be done. The only thing done to his 92fs was a Barsto barrel, sights and his own trigger job.

The Federal 115g (red box) is the best I've found so far, and have tried several.  I'll get some Rem UMC if I can find it.  What I know for sure DOESN'T work is anything 147g.  Good lord.  The heavy bullets tumble at 50ft!  Pretty crazy.  I recall the Camp Perry SAFS match was standard M9's and the M882 ball ammo provided.  Honestly it wasn't that bad.  I wonder what your friend's barrel twist was using the M882 ball?  Do you happen to know?  I've also seen the AMU now uses 1:18 twist in addition to the 1:32. Or maybe its instead, having retreated from 1:32?  Kind of wondering when and why that regression occurred?

The guy shooting the M882 ball used a Barsto barrel which used the standard at the time 1:16" twist. The only reason the 32 twist came about was from the need to use FMJ bullets. Now that the requirement is gone faster twist rates have returned. My 32 twist KKM barrel shoots the 115 JHP bullets just fine so I see no need to change.
