Smith and Wesson M41 "Function Chart/Diagram"

Greetings all,

I was telling a fellow shooter about a gentleman who prepared a chart/diagram that compared the length of various cartridges with how well they functioned in his Smith and Wesson M41.  I couldn't find my copy or it on the internet (where it was originally found as a pdf).  Does anyone remember seeing this?

what's most interesting is the standard deviation around the cartridge lengths, not so much the lengths themselves .  Look at the stdev around the Lapua Tenex...imperceptible... whereas the stdev around the Federal bulk, cavernous.  ok, so that's totally sensible.  but what it exemplifies to me is that 'you get what you pay for'....

I think as a whole; this study is quite well done.  It matches, by coincidence or not, my experience with my three, sometimes persnickety, M41's.  If someone needs to find some "make do" ammunition during our current shortage; this study will help them choose what not to spend their money on for testing.

Unless there's some other page/pages I can't see in the Word document, I see only the data points of observed lengths by brand.

Was there any correlation with feeding reliability???

This is how I use the chart....

1)  The Smith and Wesson M41 is known to be somewhat ammunition sensitive; albeit I have been able to reduce that tendency in my M41's by lowering the recoil spring rating, polishing the feed ramp/magazine interiors and honing the slide/frame rails.

2)  I look at the cartridge length of ammunition with proven (typically) functionality in a Smith and Wesson M41, e. g. any version of CCI standard velocity rounds.

3)  By correlating functionality to cartridge length I can make assumptions as to what untested cartridges "should" function, accuracy aside, in a Smith and Wesson M41.

For example....

Federal 711B standard velocity rounds are close to the CCI standard velocity rounds in length; so they should function well.  In fact they do.
Eley ammunition is shorter that the CCI; so they may have functioning issues.  In my three M41's they are problematic.

So Grumpy; if you are running low of the CCI Pistol Match that you love....save your money and don't order a case of Remington ammunition to test, as you will probably be disappointed with the results.

Of course; all the foregoing relates to function and not accuracy.
