Shooting Glasses Lens Color? Empty Shooting Glasses Lens Color?

Post by timkz13 10/24/2023, 5:52 pm

I'm going to order new prescription shooting/safety glasses and need some advice on lens color. I will be practicing at an indoor range with not so great lighting and shooting outdoors from under a covered area. I will not be in the direct sunlight. I was considering yellow lenses with a 20 to 30% tint. What other colors should I consider or just get clear? Thank you and any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I use yellow for what that's worth.

There are shades of “Orange” and “Vermillion” that are popular too.  You want a color that is a “blue blocker”.

FWIW, I have always used clear lenses including recent years with prescriptions.  The only full sun match I attend is at Perry and all the rest have covered firing points.  I don't shoot indoors anymore but I wouldn't want any dark type tint for that if I did.  I always remove the shooting glasses before I go and score so I'm wearing my sunglasses at that time to keep my eyes protected from intense sunlight.
I have contemplated trying some different colors for shooting but haven't gotten around to it.  If I were to do that, my choice would be a prescription insert in a pair of glasses that has changeable lenses.

99% of the shooting glasses I see on the pistol line are clear.

When I bought my Rangers many many years ago I fell for the sales pitch and bought yellow, vermillion and grey. I don't think I used any of them more than once. Maybe I used the grey's a few times.

I suggest rose colored glasses. That way you'll never fire a bad shot!Laughing

Have you considered Transitions lenses?
They change with the amount of light and are available in either grey or brown tint in sunlight.

Decot offers these lenses as an option.

They would be clear indoors. (gen 8 version)
Transitions Lenses | Light Intelligent Photochromic Lenses

The original transitions- were slow to return to clear indoors in colder weather, but they have improved over the last ten years or so.

Yes, I will consider that option. I had transitional lenses many years ago and they eventually got to the point where they were dark all of the time. lol I understand they are much improved now.

My optomologist who is also a shooter suggested to use the brightest color lens without squinting..

He uses frames with interchangeable lenses.

So, in seriousness, I have rose tint lenses from Decot, and they work very well in bright conditions. They call them "V-lite rose".

So long as your are not straining or squinting due to brightness.
Reason De-cot has so many lenses.

I have some Randolph shooting glasses. They have prescription lenses that are Transition. They work well outdoors, but they seem to still be slightly tinted indoors where I now do the bulk of my shooting.

If you go to the DECOT shooting glasses website they have an explanation of the colors and what they are good for

Human visual perception does not always coincide with scientific descriptions.  Also, consider that your perception to tints may change after cataract surgery.

And most colored lenses are for snapping the target out of the background. Think Trap, sporting clays.

For bullseye, the lightest shades might help, but, clear has shot the most 2600’s I’d bet.

I bought Dycot glasses last year and selected the rose color (medium darkness). I have found that this offers a very intense contrast between light and dark so it works well for iron sights. I chose the brightest shade that I thought I could tolerate. In practice I have found that this is a bit too intense and wearing them all day almost seems like it gives me a headache. I have since read that I should select the LIGHTEST SHADE that I can still perceive a benefit from. In the future I will be going with the LIGHTEST and NOT THE DARKEST shade that I feel will offer a benefit. Good luck.

Highly recommend sticking with clear.
Get transitions if you want some shade.

The colors can be helpful for shotgun for seeing clay targets against different backgrounds.

I've use tranitions for years. I no longer shoot indoors but used them for both when I did. I used Decots until the last pair. I changed from Decot because of insurance.
