Bullet speed Empty Bullet speed

I'm just wondering about the bullet speed (fps), of a round fired in Bullseye matches. I read in the Encyclopedia of Bullseye Pistol that the speed of a round should be between 730-780 fps and I've seen other data suggesting a speed of 775-820 fps. So, do you all have a speed that you think is the best for your match? Does the powder used even make a difference as long as the fps criteria is adhered to?

FPS doesn't matter in bullseye, and the powder used doesn't really either.  What does matter is a load that YOUR gun can shoot well--any thing better than 3" groups at 50 yards is good enough to make Master with.

Some will say that 230gr Hardball needs a speed around 850fps to group well at 50 yards, but it still doesn't matter what the fps are--the goal is a tight group.

There are some loads described in Gil Hebard's Pistol Shooter's Treasury that are way down in fps, probably 700ish, but they worked well for many shooters for many years in guns that were way looser than the finely machined guns that we see today.

What powder do you have available and what bullet are you going to use?  We can probably point you to a pet load that would be a good starting point for your ammo development.

Most bullseye loads run about  725-775 for lead and  820-850 for 230 hardball. fps is really not the goal, accuracy with manageable recoil that function's the gun is.

Do you use the same load for the long and short line?
