Red dot location

new shooter here and have a question regarding the optimum position for a red dot sight.  Is it better to mount it closer to the eye or further from the eye?  Currently have it as far forward on the rail as it will go.  Where do you run yours?  Shooting a SW22 Victory and i've seen several photos with the sight mounted forward and others show it to the rear.  Thanks

Try it in both places.  The pistol balance in The hand will be the determining factor.  FWIW most seem to prefer the weight nearer the hand.

A couple of inches forward or back has little effect on the sight picture but can affect the balance of the gun a LOT. If the gun feels nose heavy or if you find you are dipping the muzzle move it further back. If the gun feels light and "whippy" then move it forward to reduce movement.

I am a firm believer in a neutral or as close to center as possible.. the ideal placement would be as far forward as possible, because the relationship between the muzzle and the dot is nearly identical, but a great deal of control is lost.. The same happens in the opposite direction.. A center pivot position would be the easiest to control..  It's the same as mounting the dot higher.. the higher it is the more difficult it is to control..

I agree with SteveT. The scope becomes a movable weight and best located where it preforms best for the shooter. Like everything else in shooting there is no perfect anything because we are all different. It's up to the shooter to analyze and develop just what is best for him. (btw. he's back shooting right handed) Understand what he had to do and apply it to yourself, realize what he did may not apply to you but he analyzed what he needed to do therefore do the same analyze what is needed for yourself.  Now since the Army is requiring that they also compete in Action Pistol and using Iron Sights Adam won Bianchi Cup production division plus 2 major NRA Action Production class matches leading up to the Bianchi Cup.
