Powder and Bullet Recommendation 9MM Empty Powder and Bullet Recommendation 9MM

Post by Belton45 Tue Aug 16, 2016 9:43 am

Been lurking and reading for awhile now. I have a Dan Wesson PM9 I have been shooting at the range. Will be placing an order shortly for some powder and was curious if there was a go to powder in 9mm. I have BE, WST, N320, and W231 on hand already. Been using 4.0 of N320 and 124 MG jhp as of now. I am thinking of changing to SWC in the future and seeing what if any other powder might be recommended. Thanks.

Alliant BE-86 is another good powder for 9mm, at least with jacketed and plated bullets.  I've been using 5.5 grains behind a Nosler or Zero 115 grain JHP for the long line and 5.2 grains behind a variety of 115 grain bullets for the short line.

I was hoping somebody would get to testing BE-86 in 9mm since the speed seemed to be the right range. It seems to work well in 45 also so some one could use one powder in both cartridges.

According to BEA, it seems BE-86 would work well for both .45 and 9mm with almost no change in charge weight. He recommended starting at 5.0 and maybe going up to 5.4 or so.

I'm shooting N340 with a 129 gr. SWC and getting very good results.

Its a copy of the Hensley & Gibbs #275. I cast them with a very hard alloy, 90-7-3, lead, antimony, tin. I also have good results with the Missouri Bullet Co. 125 SWC that is very similar in shape. The gun (Kart barrel) shoots all over the paper with soft bullets, sometimes sideways on the paper. I have also shot some Saeco 145 SWCs that performed well. The long shanked bullet though, gives problems in the short 9mm cases.

WSF and N340 have been the best powders I've tested. Many of the popular loads I've tried have given poor results with lead. I think the 9mm has high enough pressure that its just not gonna work well with medium soft lead - so very different from the .45.

At this point I am pretty sure you need a good fit and very hard cast lead to make it shoot to potential. This is at odds with prevailing internet advice, and it may be that with some guns (some cartridges)  that mantra of "bullet fit is king" is wrong. Keeping the powder charge the same and shooting my real hard bullets against soft or even medium hard bullets shows all the difference on paper. Shotgun patterns instead of groups depending on hardness.

No 50 yard results yet. Maybe this weekend. But its averaging @ 2" at 25 yards with slight variations in powder charge.

WSF, Power Pistol, and True Blue. Never thought of trying BE-86.

I've had very good accuracy with WSF and TiteGroup under 120 grain coated lead. The most accurate combination I've found is odd but its coated 95 grain over HS-6 pushing 1450 FPS. I recently shot a ground hog at 125 yards and was amazing how flat it shot at that distance. I was able to hold POA which was equal to the POI.
