Grip screw size
The grips on my S&W 1911 keep getting loose. I need longer screws. Would anyone please post what size and thread pitch. I think there metric. Thanks for any help.

Re: Grip screw size
probably not Metric
std screw is
0.150 - 50
diameter:
.150
length:
.255
Thread pitch:
50 threads per inch.
Head Diameter:
.275
have you tried O-rings under the screw head

Re: Grip screw size
I suggest using low strength Locktite purple 222MS thread locked instead. Longer screws can interfere with magazine operations.

Re: Grip screw size
Thanks for the reply's. I still think I'm a beginner, my second year with the 45. I like a heavy gun so I spaced as many of these Tungsten pieces under the grips as would fit. I have a nice steady hold combined with my 160g load and the comp it barely leaves the black. I need to order a little longer screw to keep it all together.

Dave Berryhill used to have some but unfortunately that option is no longer.
C&S has long grip Bushings which may help you.

Re: Grip screw size
Not sure if this will be helpful, but I had two sets of grip screws, one that used an Allen driver to tighten, and the other that used what I think is called a "Torx" driver. I didn't want anything "special", so I ordered a set of standard 1911 grip screws from Brownells. The standard length Brownells screws I received were longer than the "fancy" screws.

Re: Grip screw size
You can try screws with 8-40 thread. It will give you couple turns before thread angle difference takes effect and precludes you from turning screw (don't force!!). Still might be enough to hold your "sandwich", and you should use purple thread locker. Otherwise you need to look for metric M4 with fine thread - M4x50
Something of this nature - https://www.ebay.com/itm/3pcs-M4-x-30-mm-0-5mm-Pitch-Fine-Thread-Allen-Hex-Bolt-Socket-Head-Cap-Screw/123634533816?epid=2293426743&hash=item1cc93145b8:g:T7IAAOSwAZRba547:rk:11&frcectupt=true
McMaster-Carr might be a good source to inquire - https://www.mcmaster.com/contact You probably want Pan Head Slotted screw.

Re: Grip screw size
Longer screws might help, but this thread compound might work better:
https://www.vibra-tite.com/products/threadlockers/vibra-tite-vc-3-threadmate/
It's sticky and reusable, perfect for grip screws which aren't super-tight in the first place, and may need to come off and on occasionally. Works well on my slim grips, which have quite short screws.

^^
I much prefer Vibra-Tite to Loctite for grip screws.

8-40 would be .164"-40 tpi, where the proper screws are .150"-50 tpi.PhotoEscape wrote:You can try screws with 8-40 thread. It will give you couple turns before thread angle difference takes effect and precludes you from turning screw (don't force!!).

Just use Challis O rings

Re: Grip screw size
M4 is for 4mm, exact OD in standard is .1575" 8-40 is .164". So difference in OD is just .0065". Pitch wise difference is also very insignificant. So 8-40 in combination with locktite can provide enough strength to hold "sandwich" with just couple threads.
If I understand issue correctly, screws are short. So O rings would not work.
