The small, plastic ring inside the knurled locking ring, has a readily available replacement if you lose it (ask me how I know).
It is a compression ring used in hydraulic lines and has many manufacturers.  The most popular is Parker brand and it is their part number 60PT-4.
Readily available on Amazon.  Now I have a couple spares sitting, ready to go.  Slide them on to the upper rod and then put the upper rod down on to the lower tube -ready to use and never get lost.  Of course now I will never need another one. Smile
