Geco bolt action .22LR ammo. Empty Geco bolt action .22LR ammo.

Post by Mike38 Sat Feb 22, 2020 2:52 pm

Has anyone tried the standard velocity .22LR ammo from Geco labeled as "Optimized for bolt action rifles"?  It's listed at 1083 FPS, so should be in the range good for target pistols, I would think? Out of curiousity I bought a brick. Peeked inside and saw the head stamp "R inside a shield" which is RWS. Is this Geco actually RWS Target Rifle, just maybe not quite up to the RWS standards? I have excellent results with RWS Target Rifle in my pistols, but the $8 per box kind of turns me away. This stuff from Geco was $2 per box. Might make for a less expensive training round?

Go for it. Awesome ammo. It is RWS’s economy brand but shoots great.

GECO and RWS are part of RUAG.  I believe they’re loaded at the same plant.

I've read that:

According to the Geco/Norma/RWS distributor ----
Geco semi-auto = Norma tac 22 = RWS semi- auto. Same thing and often the same lot numbers.

Also, Geco match 22lr = Norma match = RWS match rifle

So it sounds right that it's made in the same factory.  Probably lower grade that didn't pass some of the qc standards for some of the higher grade types.

Well I tried 100 rounds tonight for my weekly training. 50 in a Benelli MP95 and 50 in a Ruger MkII. Both pistols zeroed with Fiocchi SV. The Ruger didn't need any sight adjustments. I had to come up 3 clicks with the Benelli. Not sure why? Zero failures. Accuracy about the same as the Fiocchi. For the price, the Geco is appealing.

Could be, but I find Norma Tac 22 noticeably outshoots Geco semi-auto in my pistol.  As always when dealing with 22s, YMMV.

Is the Geco stuff a little shorter than CCI? Is someone willing to measure? Thanks!

I also would be interested in answer on Dcforeman question on length differential.  If Geco is not to much longer ,  best place to by a case based on price and availability ?
Anyone have success story's and or comment using Geco in their newer SP Pardini? and 208s ?

I purchased a case of geco and have shot a couple hundred rounds without a alibi in my pardini.  Want to do more evaluation,  especially in cold weather and in my other firearms as well.  I have read that rws is going to halt production of this ammo and start a new line under the norma label.

With that being said,  the current price may be a clearance price

I do not have the Geco action stuff but I do have Geco Semi-Auto, RWS Target Pistol, and CCI Standard. Measurements are an average of 5 from the same box. I would imagine lot to lot variation could change the values.

CCI Standard 0.988"
Geco Semi-Auto 0.970"
RWS Target Pistol 0.966"

I was looking at switching from CCI standard to something better but I am wondering if the Geco ammo has that messy lube all over the bullets?

Ransomed some of the Geco semi auto Wed nite after folks left. Tested against 3 lots of CCI SV, .Aguila SE, Rem SV(old stuff) in a new 6" Nelson. 0 failures with all. 1 lot of CCI stilI still shot the best 10 shot group, followed by Rem, Aquila, the other 2 lots of CCI, then the Geco.

Haven't taken the time to take measurements. CCI &. Rem were around 3/4-7/8", the rest hovered between
1 1/4" - 2 1/2".

Norma Tac 22 shot tighter groups at 25 yards.
But is substantially more costly (GECO $2.0 v. T22 $4.00)

Bought a couple boxes a few years back and had no issues in my Pardini. Purchased a case from target sports and it has been the only round that has given me trouble in the same Pardini. A few rounds (10-15) out of almost every brick is under powered. Very noticeable feel in recoil as well as vertical stringing on target. Also doesn't cycle action when this happens. It does say on the box "may not cycle all semi-auto guns" but the difference in recoil with some of the rounds makes me think it is a QC problem. I now use it in my Contender. I get the same vertical stringing with the same difference in recoil between some rounds. I shoot both RWS target rifle and target pistol and have none of these issues.

I use the Geco for practice and CCI SV for matches. Can't tell difference in accuracy in pistol or rifle at 50 yd from bench, although they group at a slightly different place.  I would use the Geco at matches if needed.  The Geco has a thin slimy lube film, not a big deal but I wipe my fingers off after loading.  CCI I measured is .990; Geco is .970.

Got to measuring the 50 yard Ransom tests with the 6" Nelson.
Ammo:
3 lots of CCI sv (2 had the same lot # but one was imprinted on the bottom of the box & 1 was inked on the inside flap)
Agula SE
Old Rem SV
Geco semi auto.

Measurements as follows, which includes best cluster of shots within the group:
CCI
#1: 1.155" best 9-.746"
#1.2: 2.056" best 9- 1.544"
#2: 1.807" best 8- .850"

Aquila se: 1.419" best 9-1.130

Rem sv: 2.272" (1 flier) 9-1.280

Geco: 2.572" best 8-1.287"

As Neal77 mentioned, the Geco had a lot of verticle stringing. Just judging from resetting the pistol after each shot the Geco and the Remington had noticeably more recoil.

All for now.
