How tough are these sights, as can I use this sight on my Ruger 44 carbine?

Bullseye pistol shooters have been using them mounted to the slide of their .45 ACP caliber 1911 pistols for years. I have an Ultra Dot mounted on my S&W 629. Considering that your Ruger carbine won't be shot even 1% of what bullseye pistols are, I'd say the dot sight is a good option for you. One thing to consider is that with your old eyes (like mine), the dot may not appear perfectly round to you. It's not the fault of the scope.

I prefer the Matchdot VI on Carbines. Oh, they don't work any better but they look cooler.

They also work/look good on Model 29's ( 44mag)

I recommend better rings than what comes with the Ultradot.
