Bullseye Edict

I've been around Bullseye for a few years but this one is new to me.  At Perry, I was asked by a referee not to pick up brass until everyone was done shooting.  Out of respect for the match I followed the request of the referee.  Then I was told I shouldn't close my box and prepare for the move to the short line until everyone was done shooting.  I'm trying to be a good shooter and respect others around me.  What is the proper Bullseye edict in a match?  I am not writing this to bash the referee, I would like the opinions of experienced shooters.

I'm just bored with not being able to shoot, but here you go.  Be polite and do not disturb those around you.   If you are trying to close up your box and picking up brass while shooters on either side of you are still shooting, please wait.  

If one or two positions on either side are finished as well, you should be able to quietly put your gun up and close the box / pick up brass at your position.  

On the other hand, if you're trying to get brass from under the bench, almost over the line, or generally looking and sounding like you are loading up a clown car for the trip into the big ring.   Please wait. 

If I had to give a warning to someone, I'd probably phrase it the same way.  "Please wait until the shooters are finished shooting."  Remember, the "referee" ( I assume actually a range office or one of the line volunteers) was trying to ensure that everyone gets to shoot under the most similar conditions possible, right up to the last second of every slow fire string.  

(Just for curiosity sake, was the person that said this carrying a paddle, or did they actually have a zebra shirt?)  Referees generally only comment on rules or actions, not the conditions of a match and should generally provide direction to the match director or range officials in that area.

You are correct it was not a referee and I'm sure their official title.  I appreciate your comment.  I will be more aware of this in the future.

Was your brass missing your brass catcher?

I will say that having people pick up brass from around my feet while I am shooting is a distraction - a big distraction.  Closing of the gun box isn't a distraction for me, but a shooter should do that with respect. Be quiet, slow and methodical about it.

Oddly enough, the most annoying thing I dealt with at Perry was the lawn mowers, weed whacker, and golf carts.  I cannot believe they were performing lawn care while the matches were going on - I don't think they mow the grass during the Master's tournament for golfers.  I also found it completely unacceptable that the range officials were driving gas powered vehicles right behind the line while we were shooting.  Making it more frustrating is that I believe the guy on the loudest cart was the top guy from the NRA.  

As for shooter behavior, I can't say as any shooter caused me any distractions while shooting, they were all respectful.

The only negative from Perry this year - some of the line officials carried on extensive conversations during slow fire. Should have asked them to stop.

Just remember these are the Nationals and not your local club match, many train hard all year and spend a lot of money to come here, having any distractions while your shooting should and on the most part are not allowed. When done shooting you should either stand quietly at your station and do whatever is not distracting to others, load mags, re set your dot or sights and the like or move back and sit or stand quietly till everyone's done shooting. If anyone is talking loudly you should have asked them to stop.

As for the brass catcher, if you shoot next to most military and many others too they never use one, the one distraction that is allowed is the pelting of your neighbor with nice hot brass, best have your deflectors up and in place if you set up next to one of the naturalists

I do use a brass catcher and a few pieces missed the catcher.  I appreciate the comments and advice.  I'm still learning the sport and I never intended to distract from my fellow competitors.  Live and learn.....

I too noticed line officials talking, laughing and joking around this year.  I also noticed that really loud ATV that was going around carrying officials around.  I did tell the line officials to keep quiet during firing in all cases.  I didn't get a chance to complain to the ATV driver.

I was shooting on the far left end of the line one time.  In the middle of my string, two range stat people came to the bench point to my left and started working and talking stats.  Was I due a range alibi?

 Only if you discontinued shooting, unloaded, benched the gun, inserted the ECI, stepped back, raised your hand and declared the alibi.

All I could hear was the wind rushing past my ear muffs.  Most people who are distracted by movement around them rightly wear side blinders.   
     I thought the officials on Range 3 did an outstanding and friendly job.  

I did not put up my brass net at all except on the day I shot first relay.
There was too much wind, and my focus would have been on keeping the brass net upright, and not on my shooting.

Sounds like we need to designate a range linebacker to take care of these problems.
