Wondering what the groups experience/opinion is on using 22LR sub sonic for the rapid fire stage?

A lot of shooters with Hammerli 208s and Feinwerkbau AW93s use sub sonic .22LR for all stages.

It works in my Marvel and is plenty accurate, but I have occasional weak ones that short-stroke the slide and the gun needs to be cleared manually, so I use them in practice.

What brand of Sub Sonic ammo are you talking about and what kind of gun is it in?

I'm using a High Standard Supermatic Trophy Military. It has an UltraDot 25 mounted on the barrel.

I was thinking of the RWS subsonic. Champions Choice has some in stock.

Think it's worth a shot Rob?

??

Out of a target pistol, any .22 standard velocity cartridge should be significantly "sub" sonic.

If you are breaking 1125fps with a .22 round out of a bullseye pistol, you have bigger problems than...well, you have big problems.

I'm just going by the advertising on the box John.

My thinking was more in relative terms.

If "standard velocity" is faster than "sub sonic", regardless of the actual velocity, then my question simply was, would it be better in rapid fire?

I have many problems. This isn't my first, nor will it be my last.

Remington Sub-Sonic is close to the same speed as CCI SV and shoot great out of my S&W 41 and my HS. Matter of fact the Rem SS shoot to the same POI and no adjustments are needed to my RD when I shoot them. Don't know about RWS Sub-Sonic having never tried them.

CCI Sub-Sonic 1070 fps
Rem Sub-Sonic 1050 fps
RWS Sub -Sonic 1000 fps

This is according to this chart which has been very helpful to me during this ammo shortage. If you read the article that is with this web site the guy explains his theory well and it works for me the same as it did for him.

yes, I think it's worth a shot.  At least it's ammo.  Some ammo is better than no ammo.

Even if it doesn't cycle your gun reliably, you will be able to resell it if you can't make it work for you.

Ah, got it. I guess I didn't realize that "subsonic" was a marketing term not a technical term, which the Googles tell me it is.

Thanks!

Just FWIW, "CCI Quiet" (710 fps) or other really low velocity stuff will probably not cycle your gun.  It won't in mine.

Thank you All. I just picked up a S&W Model 17. Since functioning won't be an issue, maybe I'll try it for shits and giggles...

"Subsonic" IS a technical term, but it applies only to rifle-length barrels.

I heard years ago that top velocities in .22 RF, with most ammo, are from 16-18 inch barrels. Small gas volume ends acceleration after that point, barrel friction overcoming the remaining pressure.

Where I'm at, it's pretty much buy whatever makes it to the LGS shelves. Very few choices, many days in between, two get shipments on Fridays and are sold out sometime between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.. A third place keeps it in the back and hauls it out only when customers ask. Their CCI Blazer lasted until late Saturday morning, the case (5,000 rounds in 100-round boxes) of Mini-Mags lasted until Friday evening. ONE box limit per day, and they remember faces.

Some weeks, all three stores often get no .22 rimfire. .17 HMR is staying on the shelf, though.
