Briley barrel bushing Empty Briley barrel bushing

Post by LenV 6/8/2015, 1:53 pm

Has anyone tried one of these bushings? It looks like a neat way to go for a RO. They come in drop in or gunsmith required. I might have to give one a test drive. Thanks in advance for any input.

I personally don't care for them.  In my experience the slide to bushing fit can be nicely done, but you have play between the bushing and ring an the ring and barrel. So the tolerances grow. Not good for BE.

You want it on a straight bbl also. The ring catches on an undercut bbl.

I never had one, seem to be good idea but everyone I know that tried them didn't have much good to say about them. Maybe it's in the way they are made! Good idea to remove it from your list.

Len, years ago I used a lot of them.. And had  some record setters..They will shoot.. One major problem, the average shooter will not keep them wet/lubed.. They must stay wet.. I no longer use them in competition guns, BUT, I use them almost every day.. I have a wide assortment of sizes, and use them when fitting barrels. The spring factor is completely eliminated when fitting. Once I have my lugs in the ball park, I remove the Briley, and fit the  bushing..

S&W has used them for many years on their Performance Center guns. My 845 shoots the best on the models i have. 845 and 4 versions of the 9mm PPC 9's.

It is my understanding that Briely made all the early barrels for the Performance Center.

I hate and love the one on my 952. I don't understand why they had to make it out of round. At least they could have put a little mark on it that said "this side up dummy". I keep it well lubed and the 952 shoots great it is just a bear to get back together ( yea, I finally put a little mark on it) That pistol is why I wondered how well these would work for a 1911.

I have used two of them with excellent results ! i used the oversized outside dia bushing and used there special tool to turn down the outside dia of the bushing for a tight fit to the slide.

Seems with these good reviews it might be a good idea for me to try one.  Out of round Len? How do you find it? Is the barrel hole not concentric with the ball??

Frank,  They did it on purpose for the 952 series. I guess they didn't want the bushing to float inside the collar. If you read the reviews on the 952s that seems to be the only thing that most owners complain about. Most of the time I don't remove the barrel completely when cleaning. If it was something easy to see that would be different but you have to keep rolling the bushing till it finally lines up. I put the bushing  back on my wish list.

"The only negative to the 952 is reassembly after field stripping for cleaning. DM my range partner called me to inform me after getting it field stripped he was having a very hard time with reassembly. I had no ideas at the time but after searching on the internet it seems this is a common issue with the 952. The 952 has a bushing that will rotate freely when removing the barrel. If this bushing is not in perfect alignment with the barrel upon reassembly things will not go back together just right."

The barrel only needs a tight fit when it locks up. A solid bushing with a proper fit will lock up tighter and allow more tolerance when the pistol unlocks and needs it to function. Cheaper and more reliable too.

Im not going to say they are the answer but I have had good luck with them. I replaced a series 70 collet bushing on my duty gun with one years ago and it has functioned quite reliably for many years. That old Colt still shoots tighter groups than most shooters can. It's a cheap enough way to see if you can get just a little more out of an RO.

I ordered a .582 Briley today. I will post here when I find out if it is improves the group or not. Like kwixdraw said it is a cheap enough way to experiment with.

Well???, The Briley is in my spare parts bin. I measured the barrel a bazillion times and still ordered a bushing that was a little too big. Someday I will have a barrel it fits. I did try it but the group size got larger. Crying or Very sad

You can look this up.. 2001 Jackson, Miss.  Nationals
Two Man Team winners/ record set by Richmond PD Mike Talbert and Jason Yurema
The record stood for nearly ten years.
Both guns were equipped with Brileys.
Both guns are still running with the same Brileys.. and still winning matches.. Yurema no longer shoots, but Talbert still wins his share.
The Briley requires the same effort to install at minimum tolerances and clearances as any other part.  The ring is not eccentric. The eccentric is machine inside the bushing to enable removing, and installing new or different sized rings. It is tricky to remove and install them, as the clearance is metal to metal. But, there seldom a reason to remove the ring  on the 1911 set up.. I am not familiar with the S&W series..
Run them wet....

I guess I will give it another try. I just realized that I had purchased several new barrels since I put the Briley into the parts bin. I have a 38 super barrel in my RO that it fits perfectly. After spending several hours finding my recoil spring plug* and 2 minutes actually swapping it out it is ready to take to the field. Once again I hope to be able to give a report sometime.

* The "Real Avid" 1911 smart wrench works great for taking a 1911 apart. They suck for getting them back together.

While waiting for an angle bored bushing from EGW, I used a .583" dia Briley bushing (use it for fitting barrels) in two 2700's with only one ammo related refire. Barrel is a Kart .5805" greased with molylube from Larrys Guns.Briley barrel bushing Cimg1813

I will soon find how good they are. Ordered 2 from Brownells, one for a 1911 I'm building for myself and another for a Gold Cup I'm doing for a friend. I do have Jig Borers and intend to make a double bored bushing that will be bored while the bushing is in the slide and matching the barrel location in both open and closed positions.

Hello Wes..
How did shoot for you..??
Some where, I have an angle bore from EGW..Can't find it.. I love George's parts and innovation, he's always ahead of the curve,  but I didn't care for the double angle bore for bullseye. I think it takes away to much bearing surface.  But that's just me.. It might work great for you.. When I angle bored bushings, I fit the barrel with a tight Briley.. Then I locked the barrel to the slide, mounted it on a sine plate, and measured the angle of lock up.. Then I used that to bore the angle.. The 52' minute thing is arbitrary..  But now... I am all cone..Smile
