Scoring off center repair center, which ring counts?

Post by willnewton on 6/1/2017, 7:01 am

So we had a situation in which the shooter did not staple up their center perfectly.  Most of the time it is not a big deal, but there was a very close shot that was a six on the repair center, but a seven on the main target.  We had some good natured fun at the shooter's expense and gave him the seven.

Surely, this has happened before deeper in the target and we never check or care, but it was at the edge of the repair center and easy to see by lifting the repair center edge 1/4" and got us to thinking about it. No one quite knew what the "official" rule was.

I still wonder what the correct protocol is for this.  I did not see an answer in the rule book, but I may have missed it.

When in doubt, give the benefit to the shooter. It's somewhere in the rulebook.

if the shot was on the repair center I would use those rings.. That's what he/she was shooting at

Yeah if the entire shot is on the center then he should get what it scored on the center. If its barely touching the center but somehow scores different on the main target it would get interesting.

Never thought about that myself until this last weekend when I was scoring a newbie and he started stapling his repair center on and it was clearly not lined up well. We fixed the problem before we left the scoring line. Helping out the new shooters brings me back to when I was one.

Greetings,

I was told by an NRA Referee that the scoring is based on the center of the target.

He had a full size overlay that he used to determine scores. It was aligned with the X-ring of the repair center.

Sadly, he is now todt and cannot be used as a reference.

Cheers,

Dave

Well, that is the most official sounding so far.

I checked NRA Bullseye, International, and CMP rules. There was nothing I came across specifically.

Only way to address the way your target was scored is if you think it was not scored correctly. You can challenge it and abide by the decision of the Director or what have you. Even thought there is no rule I can find that directly addresses this situation.
