160 g. Loads
The stickies here say 4.5 g. of BE. Is the go to load for thev160 lead swc. With this I have not had excellent groups. I was thinking of testing it around 775 fps.which I think would be around 4.0 g.. Has anyone tried 4.0 g? How much powder to cycle a slide mounted 1"Ultradot? Does this bullet need a tight crimp of .463 to .465?

Re: 160 g. Loads
I use Brazos 160 LSWC Hi-tec coated for practise and the short line. In an accurised SARO with a slide mounted 1" UD. Did quite a lot of testing and got a lot of useful advice on this Forum. Ended up with 4.4 of N310 to produce about 790fps. The crimp makes a big difference - I went with 0.463".
Make sure that you seat the bullets well - about 0.920" to the shoulder was recommended to me.
Some folks say that N310 needs about 10% more powder than BE to produce the same ballistics, but I have not tried to evaluate that relationship.

Having just written this I see that the next thread is specifically about 0.463" crimps - a wide range of opinion. I'm not qualified to make any kind of definitive judgement - but it is working OK for me. I will experiment with looser crimps when I get a chance.

the 160 is not a good 50 yard choice , we tried them with all kinds of loads with them not being consistent. Now different story at 25 yds, one hole groups with the 4.5 but got bigger the slower you pushed them.

Re: 160 g. Loads
I tried some Brazos 160s last summer. I also did not have great results with them at 50 yards. They shot beautifully at 25.
I must add that I’m very excited about the Brazos 200 SWC. I Recently bought 1000 and have been shooting them over 4gr. BE. Great long line results from three different 45s. I’ve cast my own bullets for years but think I’ll quit casting and shoot these.

I’ve found 4.3 BE is minimum for my slide mounted dots

Have a shooting buddy runs 4.0 of BE in his 45 slide mounted 1" UD.crimp is probably 468
I'm down to 4.3 of WS5 with 467 crimp
Both are SL loads
