What velocity were you looking for with a 148LWC Empty What velocity were you looking for with a 148LWC

Post by Slamfire Thu 3 Dec - 23:34

I have shot a bunch of 148 LWC's in the 38 Special, with 2.7 grains Bullseye. Heard it was a standard load but I never shot it at 50 yards for accuracy. It shot "well" at 35 yards, but I was not shooting on paper, and I was not target shooting when I used this load. Now I am curious,

4" S&W M10-5

148 LWC 2.7grs Bullseye W/W cases WSP
19-Apr-09 T ≈  60-65 ° F

Ave Vel = 696.2
Std Dev = 12.04
ES = 48
High  = 721.3
Low  = 673.3
Number shots = 32

 v accurate, about 2" low, no leading, mild recoil

4" M66-2

148gr LBBWC 2.7 grs Bullseye CCI 500 primers
17-Oct-93 T = 65-70°F

Ave Vel =704fps
Std Dev =18
ES =57
High  =742
Low  =685
N =6

Colt Police Positive  Special 4" Barrel  mfgr 1930

Zero 148gr LWC Factory
 4 Sept 2005 T = 72 °F

Ave Vel = 810
Std Dev = 72
ES = 213
High  = 943
Low  = 730
N = 6

Colt Python  Stainless Steel, 6" Barrel

148 gr LBBWC 2.7 grs Bullseye  38 SPL cases  CCI500
24 Sept 1999 T =  78 ° F

Ave Vel = 710
Std Dev = 18
ES = 72.02
High  = 746.1
Low  = 674
N = 32

I do see that factory ammunition went 810 fps out of my Colt Police Positive which is faster than my loads. Anyway for accuracy and stability at 50 yards, how fast should a 148 LWC be going?

Wow, that's kind of high from Zero. The other classic load is 2.7-700x

Velocity high 6, to low 700s. That's for HBWC. Is that what you're referring to? Solids can go faster without issues; there is no skirt to blow off the head.

I chronographed the following loads out of a 10 inch Contender
700X: 2.5 & 2.8.   Velocity 787, 837.
Bullseye: 2.7 & 3.0.  Velocity 783, 841
Red Dot. 2.9 & 3.1. Velocity 879, 900.  DO NOT USE THE 3.1 LOAD!

Of these the most accurate were 2.7 Bullseye, 2.9 Red Dot and 2.8 Win 452AA which gave a velocity of 788.

Drop these velocities 50-75 fps for a 5 inch barrel.

The 3,1 load of Red Dot is over SAAMI max pressure for+P.  That powder is very touchy in 38 special.

Been a long time since 452AA been available. I think I shot up my last can in the 1980's!

So, you think the solid LWC would be accurate and stable at 50 yards going 750-760 out of a six inch tube?

The only other powder I might use with this bullet is Titegroup. And if my 45ACP experience is similar, I don't expect much, if any, powder grains difference between Titegroup and Bullseye Pistol. Considering the number of kegs of Bullseye I have, a Titegroup test would just be for the pursuit of knowledge.

TBH, I don’t really know the accuracy differential between solids and HB.  My guess is that, at 50 a solid cast might cost points and Xs but no more that a couple of points and maybe half your normal x count.  Otherwise I’d find another bullet.

I forgot to mention the ammo I shot was all Speer HBWC.

452AA is legit. "Some people" still shoot it to great effect.

If I remember correctly, 2.7gr BE Magnus 148 hbwc from 6” Clark long slide 38 gave me 735 ish. I’ve shot 100 on long line with this load.
