Danny Estes, a HM and 2650 shooter, shot a 41.

High Masters and S&W 41 - Page 2 Empty M41 used by champions

In the mid-eighties, when I visited WTBn, Quantico occasionally, word was that one of the USMC legends, CWOX Frank Higginson, shot his national record  898 with a M41, long before dot sights were invented. I cannot verify that this feat occurred when he won the nationals.

I sincerely believe that these records will persist because of not in spite of iron sights. While I no longer have the hold l once had, it gives confidence of trigger that can come into doubt with a dot. The other factor is you can’t get any closer to bore center with anything but irons

A good M41 is as good as any and many of the internals are close to a Hammerli 208. A relined M41 is as accurate as any 22LR. Bull barrel is too nose heavy for me but a great smith can lighten it. There are some little fixes than can greatly enhance reliability but they are more ammo sensitive than a Hammerli or a Conversion. They are a little less forgiving than a conversion.

I had a gun that KC  tuned and it was exception and I regret not giving it more time but at the time I was shooting Master scores with a Nelson.

Frank actually shot that record score of 898-62x in 1968.  Jason Meidinger shot that same score 30 years later and is co-holder of the National Record.  Obviously, Frank shot his with irons.

I shot a 41 for quite a while. I found the 5.5 heavy barrel too nose heavy so I cut a long field barrel to 5.5” and shot that combination for quite a few years. I eventually switched to a Marvel unit set up identical to my 45 top end so always shooting the same grip and trigger.Just swapped slides basically.Always continued to carry the 41 as a backup.Still shoots great.
