At a crossroads here, do I buy the les baer decided and drop a k.c roll trigger into it? Or do I go ahead, buy the Springfield range officer and have k.c. rebarrel it, put a new bushing on, and drill and tap it for a scope rail? The cost will be about the same, just need to decide what I want

I'd go for Springfield + K.C., he's a top notch gunsmith and a great person, you won't be disappointed.
Wish I could afford any of K.C. masterpieces Smile

Hmm, that's quite unusual design. I assume I release the shot by squeezing the tube, right? How accurate is it at 50 yards? And can I mount optics on it?

A KC built RO will be a better pistol than the Baer. I think of Baers as good base pistol for a build. That probably got me in trouble :p)

I have seen the video that was on line, not sure if it is anymore of how LB is making guns. I think it a good video of how NOT to make a BE pistol! I've also know of a few that were not satisfied will the LB they purchased.
On the other hand I've seen a few of KC's guns and the shooters that owned them were very happy with it.
 Simply put go with KC!!

No difference between the 2 these days. Unless you want to shoot optics

Kc might have some redbuff mounts, and sams sells a frame mount. Only 2 worth buying

So the range officer will shoot both loads the Same? Obviously might need to change recoil springs but I am going to have him drill and tap it for a frame scope mount

Ball guns were Gi grip safety and 230 FMJ. Rules have changed so most people gun beavertail safeties and 185jhp.

Having several LB's and 2 KC's custom builds, 9MM & 45 - both frame mounts.  I'd vote for RO & KC, you will have a far better gun in the end.

- Dave
p.s. I'm having KC fit a .38 Super barrel for the 9MM

K.C. has built 2 guns for me. There are so many positive reasons to recommend him to you. He is a superbly talented gunsmith with an impressive resume. Research what it takes to earn the USMC MOS 2112. 2112's are few and far between. Add to all the experience he has gained since retiring from the Marine Corps and all that he does for the bullseye community and sport made my decision a snap. K.C. is a very customer-friendly gunsmith and he explains any and all questions I had. He kept me up to date on the builds along the way. I know there are many qualified gunsmiths, but to me K.C. is always someone I will go to, to  build me the exact gun that is right for me and that will always out shoot my very modest abilities.

p.s. yes I was a Marine, but that fact does not change anything I have said.

I really like my KC trigger I put in my R1 frame for mt dedicated Nelson 22LR.  I also like my LB Wad gun a lot it might not be as good as KC's but the test target is 1.6" and I didn't have to pay the extra $300 for 1 tenth of a inch better,  I am really debating on dropping another KC trigger assy in it so both pistols are the same.  It is just hard to do it on a gun I paid so much for.  The trigger is has is ok it just doesn't roll that I can tell. Fire a thousand or two rounds through that gun and go test it

1/10 of an inch is a long way. I've dry fired KC's shop gun, Zins ball, wad and 22s, and I like the short roll. I yet to have it on my 1911's but I think I would like it. I will probably try it on my Marvel mounted on a Range officer with lightened springs and sans ILS. I doubt if I could get all 3 Marvel, wad and ball done with enough time to work with them this year. Though I might try since I cannot shoot NRA week due to schedule change.
