Red Dot Sight Brightness Level Empty Red Dot Sight Brightness Level

For those of you who are shooting with a red dot sight, any brand, AND if you're part of the group who focus on the target, not the dot, what brightness range do you usually shoot at?  I'm thinking of a 2MOA Aimpoint sight, shooting at 25 and 50 yards as I'm writing this.  (Feel free to reply if you're focused on the dot, not the bull, but for me, and my eyes, it seems more realistic to focus on the target.  I'm guessing both ways of doing this are popular.)

It's also dependent on where I'm shooting - outdoors in bright sunlight, with the Matchdot II, I put the polarizing filter back on, to dim "the world" so I didn't need to have the brightness level on the sight turned up so much.  For whatever reason, the Aimpoint worked better for me.  My old ADCO sight was not useable - the dot was completely washed out.  Oh well.....

My thoughts so far are:

  • if the brightness is too high, not only does the "dot" get distorted, but it gets bigger, and overwhelms the target.
  • if the brightness is too high, it takes my attention away from the target too easily.
  • if the brightness gets too low, for me, it's even more difficult to pick up the dot when raising the gun.
  •        I understand one should work at this until the gun naturally is pointing where it should, but I'm not there yet.
  • For me, that leaves a range of brightness levels that are useable.
  • If I'm looking at the target, the dot needs to be bright enough that I can judge where the circle of confusion is, relative to the bullseye.

Before I left for India, I was leaving the brightness quite high, mostly so I could find the dot, then maneuver it towards the bull.  That part went fine, but for getting ready to shoot, I think if was dimmer, it would be easier to concentrate on the bull.  I'll try something different if you guys have a better suggestion, but lacking that, I'll turn the brightness down as far as I can, but not past the point where it's too difficult to find (and use) the dot.

I shot mu first match on an overcast day with my dot intensity set perfectly, and was doing exceptionally well...until the sun popped out just as the "beep" went off and my dot disappeared.

Now I leave it turned up to "suns out" brightness!

Maybe they could add ABC - Automatic Brightness Control, to compensate for a change in natural lighting.  It's already patented:  https://patents.google.com/patent/JP2002538403A/en

Thinking about this, I set my dot “neutral”. Not so bright that it overwhelms the target, and not so dim that the target overwhelms the dot. The dot is just there...equal visual input...neutral.
