Drilling & tapping Walther GSP

I currently have the BME mount that replaces the rear sight, but I am thinking that I want to change this up a little.  I want a rear sight for CMP matches and I want to also shoot with the dot for 2700's.  I could spend $900 or so on a whole upper which would be awesome, but that is a lot of money for a few CMP matches per year.  Has anyone drilled and tapped the bolt housing for a short rail?  I have a smith here that could do it for me, but if anyone on this site knows whether or not it's a good idea, that would help me make up my mind.

I was talking to Shaswatha about the same thing for his GSP. It looks like a short base mount could be installed and be well below the factory iron sights.

I shoot a GSP as well, also with a dot sights.  I used the $900 to buy a really nice Model 41 with the 7 3/8 barrel. The distance from the front of the front sight to the rear sight is 9 1/2", which is just under the maximum length of 10" allowed for CMP.

I took off my BME mount and put the rear sight back on last night.  Going to the range to re-zero today hopefully.  I'm going to talk to my gunsmith about tapping the housing with 2 bolts to the right and left of center rather than down the middle.  The steel is pretty thin in the middle of the square sectioned housing.  There's room for about a 1 3/4" portion of rail there.  I'll mount the dot with 2 rings on the front of the tube or put on a micro eventually.   I forgot how nice the sights are on theses.  I may just shoot open for a while and see how it goes.

I took it to the range yesterday and after I shoot a little to get the feel for it I shot a eic style NMC.  279, 93,98,90.  The rapid will come up some with practice.  So I'm encouraged to keep shooting irons for a while.  I borrowed Linda's Gehmann iris and really didn't see the benefit.  I may try it a few more times though.

I set my iris at the beginning of every match. Start with the largest opening, aim at the black and adjust the iris aperture smaller at the same time. You will reach a diameter where the sights and the bull will both be much more in focus at the same time. It makes a notable difference.
