Post by Brian.highstandard 7/29/2018, 8:14 am

My name is Brian Miller and I want to possibly change to a wooden match grip for my Hammerli SP 20 in .32 S&W Long. I am looking for a used grip in good shape so I don't have to purchase a new grip from Larry's Guns. Any suggestions where I would look or does anyone here have on for sale?

Thanks Brian

Are you looking for the "wooden grip adaptor" or a wooden grip itself?  The reason I ask is Rink will cut the factory grip for free if you are purchasing their grips.  I wasn't aware that Larry's had the wooden grip adaptor in stock, I was advised they were no longer available?

Hello Greg Brenner. I am looking for the wooden grip adaptor. I had talked with to someone from Rink and they will not cut the grip even if you are buying their grip. Larry's has a grip which included the grip, magwell and the rest of the frame under the barrel. Larry's will cut the grip but then I'm out of commission for 6-8 weeks. If I buy a new grip from Larry's it's an additional $165 making the grips about $424. Way .too much.

Greg I was wrong about Rink. I looked at the email from Larry's Guns and Rink will cut the grip if you buy their grips. Then $248 for the Rink custom Bullseye grip with my frame. I want to complete the outdoor season before I send my grips to Larry's. Our outdoor season goes through at least August. This gun shoot better than my .22's . Thanks ! Brian

Thx Brian, I just purchased my SP 20 a couple weeks ago, and I’m liking it a lot!

I have Rink grips on most of my target pistols, tentative plan to order their grips, then send mine to be cut maybe a week before they are ready. I plan to ask Thomas how difficult the cut is, I might just let my LGS to do it..

Hey Greg!! I do like the Angled wrist grip that is needed to fire this gun and see the sights properly. It locks your wrist in place and easy to get back on target for timed and rapid. I am shooting 1.5 GR of Trail Boss with the Lapua 83 GR HBWC. For outdoor at 25 yards and shoots really well. Our range does not a 50 yard so we are shooting all targets at 25 yard with NRA reduced targets. And very little recoil with this load. My gun likes this load. What are you shooting?

I currently have the 22version, the 32conversion is in the mail. However, I have several other 32 target pistols and will use the load I use for them.

Speer 98 gr Plinkers, reswaged (bumped) to a diameter of.3145, 1.3-1.4 of n310 in Lapua brass for 25 yards. 1.6 for 50, although I don’t shoot much at that distance.

Just FYI, The 32 conversion I am getting has a barrel diameter of .3135.

Hey Greg!! What is the model number for the .22 version of the Hammerli SP20? Good shooter? Is the 1.3 -1.4 of Vitavouri a mild load? Any idea of velocity? I have always use Trail Boss because it's a light load and not much recoil and I can see the powder in the case because it's a little bit bigger. It looks like small cheerios. If I would ever double charge the load it would overflow the case. Thanks Greg! Brian

SP 20 RRS. Very nice shooter, still having some challenges getting the trigger the way I want, but optimistic.

Yes, the loads are definitely mild, great for 25 yds. Velocity is low 600s.  I recently switch from WST to the n310 mostly based recommendations here. It meters very well.

Hey Greg!! The man I bought the gun from was using WST and had much more recoil and snappy. I should try Vitavouri N310 and that about the same velocity as mine. Thanks for your comments.

Brian, there are quite a number of threads on this forum re: 32 S&W L reloads, including powder, bullets, brass, etc. In particular look for some by FC60, he is the acknowledged expert on 32L. Welcome to the forum!!

I have no experience at all with Trail Boss but You might just try 1.4 and maybe 1.3 and see what happens? For target and 25 yards, I generally try to find the mildest load that will shoot accurately. What velocity are you getting with your current loads? I have noticed when I start loading a bit hotter, say 1.5-1.7g, the recoil is noticably more snappy. The way you describe the Trail Boss (Trail Boss it's a light load and not much recoil and I can see the powder in the case because it's a little bit bigger. It looks like small cheerios) might suggest that you might have some issues with getting consistent metering with such small quantities??  Also, N310 and WST are fast burning powders, where does TB stack up?

Do you know the precise loads that the seller was using?

Do you have a dot sight or using irons?

Hey Greg! The man I bought the gun from was using 1.7 WST AND IT WAS REAL SNAPPY. I am a conservative and could not find any published loads for WST so I backed off of that. Trail Boss throws the cartridge half the distance of WST. And WST is my go to powder for lots of loads including .38 special and .45 ACP..and I don't really know how fast burning Trail Boss is but it burns clean. I'm loading from a Dillion 650. And yes I was concerned that 1.5 of another powder sitting in a small case would fire consistently or getting a bullet stuck in the barrel not getting the right amount of powder to drop. I'm using a micrometer from Unique Tek and now is consistent.

I am shooting the Vortex Venom red dot sight and really like it. I do need to look at the burn rate compared to others but I'm really satisfied with Trail Boss.

I'll get back to you!! Thanks!!

Hey Greg!! Here's the burn rate of various powders from the fastest to slowest. N310 is number 3, Bullseye number 13, WST is number 18, Trail Boss number 19 and Winchester 231 is number 29. Hope that helps!! Brian
