Ok guys I am looking for some information on loading jacketed 185gr 45 loads.  My questions are are my attempt to help reduce me trying to re-invent the wheel.  At what velocity has your experiences delivered the best accuracy? I know that many people have said that the 750 fps is somewhat the magic number.  I do own a chronograph so actual velocities can replicated if you have some magic information you can pass along.  Other information such as COL, crimp measurement, and other general loading data that has proven itself would also be appreciated.  I am trying to seach the forum for helpful data but not having great success.

4.6 BE w/either Nostler or Zero 185 JHP. Crimp @ .469. TZZ match brass OAL escapes me at this point. Load has RRest in 5 different BE guns at 2" for the worst & 1" at the best.

4.2-4.5 Vihtavouri N310 or WST at 1.2" lightly crimped 0.469" has worked well for me. New brass for long line and Zero 185 JHP is the bullet I use. I"m currently using 4.5 N310 for both lines just for the sake of simplicity.

Do you need to make a dope change between 50 and 25 with that load?  I’m also trying to develop a ball gun load with the same components nosler 185 jhp

I use 4.4gr N310, 1.22" OAL, med to light crimp. Between 25 and 50 yds I adjust 4 UD clicks, 8 AP clicks.

I've not seen any difference between Zero's bought 3 or 4 years ago, older Nosler bought 15 years ago or older Remingtons probably bought 10-12 years ago.

If I re-learn how to shoot master scores with the 45 I'll go back to shooting new Starline brass and 4.8gr at 50 yards, but until then the ~1/2" accuracy improvement isn't worth the wear and tear.

I finally figured out that 4.6 gr BE was just enough better shooting at the long line that it was worth the extra recoil. I still have a bunch of 4.2 loads for the short line. I have never found any of the 4 (Nosler, XTP, HAP or Zero/Magnus) contenders for "most accurate" to be any different in performance. I tend to purchase whatever is the best buy. Lately with a active LEO/Reserve shooter in our group it makes sense to purchase very large batches from Zero.

Loading 185 gr Jacketed Bullets Empty 185 JHP loads

I have a reload chart from USMC that states 4.2 VVN will equate to 822 fps. And 4.7 BE will equate to 826 fps.
There are additional notes to that but I don't know how to upload the PDF to this site. I kinda dumb at this stuff
But they did state the bullet heads were Nosler, in addition to some other requirements

Best way to share a pdf on this site is to save each page as a photo and upload that. Tedious, but it works.

In my  wadgun I am using 4.3 of N310 Zero 185 JHP. Crimp is .471 with COAL at 1.210. It simply shoots way better than I am capable of. I load it down to 3.9 for the short line. My ball gun likes it at 4.2.. everything else the same. For the long line shooting that bullet, speed is your friend. Somewhere around 800 fps seems to be the sweet spot.

I’m trying 4.3 for the ball gun.  I’ve tried it in the wad gun and yea...it shoots great.  I’m thinking if the ball gun likes it so much easier for me!  Not sure if that’s too stout for short line.  Recoil does not bother me

One can easily attach files in many formats to a post in this forum, including pdf. Don't use the "Quick Reply" feature at the bottom of a thread, instead use either the "Post Reply", "Quote" or the "New Topic" button. There is an "Attach File" feature under the main posting pane (see pic below), use that to browse to your attachment and upload/post.

Loading 185 gr Jacketed Bullets Empty Am attaching load data for 45

Post by Dipnet 7/30/2019, 2:03 am

These data are compiled form manuals and from data reported on web, and by no means have I tested it all. The data are only intended as starting data for developing loads and safe loading practices must be used to avoid injury or death. I use the highlighted loads in a 6-inch Rock River with great results. Cheers, dipnet

I see some saying for long line and short line.  Do you use the jhp for both lines?  Reason I ask is because the 4.3gr of N310 just feels awesome to me..love the recoil feel, and my gun eats em up with no function problems at all.  Heck, I even went up to 12 lb spring and it still feels and functions great.  Why would I not use these at both lines?  Obviously accuracy is important but they are accurate.  And with the current midway sale I can get them pretty cheap.

I mean maybe not for practice but.....who knows.

I think you'll find that most of the High Masters shoot one load across the course.
