Thinking about adding one to my LB TRS.

Im hoping it is as accurate as my Ruger 22/45. Would that be correct?

I have a 22/45, Colt Match Target, and a Nelson.

The Nelson is much better than the other two.  At least until I can save up and have Jon fix my 22/45.

I just put my Nelson Conversion on a Ransom Rest not too long ago.  I only used CCI Standard, and my tightest group was about 2.25"  at 50 yards.

That's not good.  Did you try other ammo types or a re-crown?  Larry will address it if you are unhappy without pause.  CLASS ACT!

I agree!  I was actually on the rest to test some 45 loads, and thought I'd throw on my conversion for fun and see what my groups were with the Nelson, and the CCI I happened to have in my box. I thought I'd be under an inch for sure.  I couldn't believe how bad the groups were.  Unfortunately, CCI is my go-to, I have lots of it, and Larry Nelson chambered the conversion for CCI Standard.  I'm not sure what other ammo would be similar to CCI as far as chambering goes.  i.e. I believe that some European stuff might be sized smaller and therefore not chamber as well?

No complaints, really.  Like I said, I thought the groups would be better.  Match accuracy seems to be right where I call my shots.  I'm thinking I should get on the rest again and try other ammo, verify proper rest setup, etc.  I was able to get my 45 groups under 1.5", So I'm not sure why the 22 was so loose.

As far as I can remember no guarantee of accuracy is stated with the nelsons and the two I built had no test targets with them when I bought them.

no brainer at 50 ft...50 yards is a whole other ballpark.

I run SK in mine and I remember it being under 2" when I tested it.. that was with pistol match.. larger with standard plus but still not bad

Above group was 50 yards not feet. The 4 we have tested have all been around .7 to 1.75 @ 50 yards (Eley Pistol Match).  I have also tested a Marvel with a .6" button that we could only get 1.25" groups from it and it has grouped below 1" for me before.

The RR she is fickle sometimes/always.  I've had days with the RR where I just gave up because I knew the gun/ammo combo was better than the results I was getting and I proved it by shooting off sandbags.

I fixed my above post. I meant to type YDS......

Yes, the ransom rest is subjective..and fickle..and aggravating and different with every user.

Is anyone maintaining an expert classification with a Nelson?  or better?

Many, many using Marvels (and probably Nelsons) are Masters and High Masters. John Zurek and Dan Pauley come to mind.

Nelson 22 Conversion bullseye accurate? Empty Re: Nelson 22 Conversion bullseye accurate?

Post by straybrit 7/11/2016, 8:47 pm

I sometimes put my Nelson on top of my RO ball gun for the 22 match. I typically score low 830s with that (i.e. 4lb trigger and irons) setup using CCI SV. Given the 'goes to call' nature of the shots I'd say it's at least as good as the Marvel I normally use (2.5lb trigger and rd) and if I've bothered to actually practice recently I generally shoot high 840s with that.

If I could just get my brain to stay on task for then entire match I'm pretty sure that both guns would post much better scores :-)

I shot next to John Zurek at the Desert Midwinter this year and he was lamenting that the older Marvel he was using wasn't quite as good as the new Nelson he would have used had he brought the correct gun. Took him 4 shots to get the sights adjusted to the gun he'd brought by mistake then I think he maybe had 3 shots outside the 10 ring for the rest of the match. I think it's safe to say that either conversion will outshoot any normal human being.

Zurek is back to shooting his ol' Marvel. I shoot all the 22 conversions I build. I've found them to perform and feel equal between the 2 brands. 50 yds are on call and at 25 its a nice knot. I don't Ransom very often because I don't feel the need to because of my shooting ability
No I'm not claiming that I shoot as good as a Ransom rest Wink
I would be happy with shooting either brand. They are both Bullseye worthy.

Best Ransom rest groups I ever got with Marvel, Advantage Arms, and Nelson (even with the Bob Marvel barrels in the AA and Nelson) are 1"=/- with good ammo like Eley.  Never have I duplicated a "test button" group.  3/4" was probably the best and that was with an AA barrel.  But that same AA barrel shot Green Tag about 4-5".  All this at 50yds.

My single best RR group ever was 5/8 with CCI SV in my Oregon Precision Arms clone of Ruger Mk2.  A flyer made it 5/8.  The tight knot was like .2    But not enough data to get out of the luck realm.

For grins and giggles, in a few weeks I will be freeeeeee of work and into retirement with time for more shooting and might get in some more RR time

I agree with Jon on trusting your own shooting.  If I can armrest about 3/4 inch at 25 yds or 2" at 50 yds with feel good shots, I am happy with that.  Then stand on my hind legs and bang away.

Last time I machine rested my Marvel (been a while) it shot 4 different ammos (eley, r50, aguilla & lapua) into 10 shot groups all less than 5/8 at 50 yds. The button is around 5/8 with 4 almost touching and the flyer making 5/8. I've always been very pleased with this pistol. My personal best SF target (100-8x) was with this pistol, yet I shoot a custom Hammerli 208s and pick up my new Pardini SP this week Smile

I replaced my Ruger 22/45 with a Nelson conversion last year.  The Nelson will shoot sub 1" groups at 25 yards, with CCI SV, from a bench rest all day long.  I have never tried a RR or premium ammo since this gun shoots much better than I do.

My Nelson RR tested at .75 or under with SK standard plus, Norma tac , Eley Club.  Wolf  Target was the largest group at 1.1"  and that was because for some reason there was always one out side the group.   The smallest was .6 with with Norma tac (not the match)   I didn't test CCI because I didn't have any.

Nelson has very good customer service.

Folks,

There is more variation between individual lots of .22 ammo than there is between brands, or between product lines within a brand.

This is all music to my ears. Recently (in the last 10 months) I have started shooting/practicing with another club and some of the members are very accomplished shooters....

Im hoping to bring my level up closer to theirs in the near future...and stay there. LOL
